Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion, Jerry Falwell Library Student Worker Assistant will conduct themselves professionally, courteously, and politely in interactions with library employees and customers. They will support one or more of the departments within the Jerry Falwell Library.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts themselves as a professional by being on time and reliable for scheduled hours, adhering to the student worker dress code, and following instructions. Communicates clearly, including responding to emails in a timely manner, answering the phones and, alerting the supervisor to changes in schedule. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor and library administration. Strictly adheres to Liberty University policies, representing the University in an exemplary manner. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission. Performs the duties of the relevant position:

Acquisitions and Cataloging Assistant: ensures accurate and complete physical processing of books and materials being added to the library's collections. The assistant completes basic cataloging and acquisition tasks to assist Acquisitions and Cataloging Specialists. This position reports to Specialists. Assists in the physical preparation of library materials (Stamping, RFID tag, labels, dust jacket, etc.) Assists with book repairs. Assists with searching for records, creating files in OCLC Connexion client. Assists with basic electronic cataloging projects as needed.

Administrative Office Assistant: provides basic administrative assistance to the Operations & Budget Manager (OBM) and other administrative personnel. The assistant offers public service and support with departmental paperwork, running errands, and other duties as assigned.

Assists with administrative duties such as copying, filing, scanning, and entering data using MS Excel. Delivers documents, mail, and office supplies to other JFL departments and occasionally to other campus locations. Answers phones and assists LU students, staff, and guests with basic questions. Communicates clearly with staff and faculty and promptly responds to project requests.

Archives Assistant: helps the Archivist with a variety of customer service, preservation, and organizational tasks. This position reports to the Archivist and the Archives Specialists. Enters and retrieves materials from the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), including submitting requests to the ASRS queue, retrieving materials from the Level 00 workstations, and returning materials to the correct bin at the workstations. Enters data into databases, enters survey data using MS Excel, posts information to the Digital Commons, works with digital files, and scans documents into digital format. Provides customer service while staffing the reception desk, answering basic questions, assists customers with requesting materials, and monitors customers in their use of archival materials. Preserves items by photocopying materials, handles items with care, and keeps the Archive areas free of contaminates.

Collection Management Assistant: performs clerical tasks to support the Collection Management Librarian in evaluating and assessing the physical collection, including material donated to the library. This position reports to the Collection Management Librarian. Collects and records use and condition data about the library's physical materials. Locates books in the catalog and retrieves items from the library stacks or from the Automated Storage and Retrieval System. Processes materials donated to the library, including searching the catalog for holdings, sorting materials, unpacking/packing boxes, and assisting in the physical disposition of materials.

Curriculum Library Student Assistant: delivers excellent customer service within the Jerry Falwell Library by answering basic directional, research, and computer or technical-related questions from all library customers. This position demands an obvious, vigilant posture while staffing the service desks. This position reports to the Curriculum Library Manager. Provides research assistance to customers in locating library resources using basic database, electronic book, and computer searching techniques. Assists customers with the use of the materials of the Curriculum Library, lamination, purchasing, binding, and copying. Performs general duties such as completing hourly counts, providing directions, and doing what is needed to maintain a clean and clutter-free environment conducive to study. Answers the Curriculum Desk phone, giving proper and precise directions to places within the library as well as across the campus, and directing questions to librarians and other departments as necessary.

Customer Service Assistant: delivers excellent customer service within the Jerry Falwell Library by answering basic directional, research, and computer or technical-related questions from all library customers. This position demands an obvious, vigilant posture while staffing the service desks. This position reports to the Learning Commons Manager and Customer Service Supervisors. Provides research assistance to customers in locating library resources using basic databases, electronic books, and computer searching techniques. Gives basic technology assistance by troubleshooting computers, answering printer questions, and keeping printer paper stocked. Performs general duties such as completing hourly counts, providing directions, and doing what is needed to maintain a clean and clutter-free environment conducive to study. Maintains a vigilant posture to support customers who may need assistance.

Events and Outreach Assistant: supports the Library Events Manager with the scheduling and setup of event spaces in the Jerry Falwell Library, including the planning and implementation of events sponsored by the Jerry Falwell Library as well as those requested by Liberty University entities. Additionally, this position will contribute content to and assist with content management for the library's Social Media Committee. Other responsibilities include leading library tours; interacting with special visitors; and participating in the library's presence at campus events. This individual will also assist in maintaining an orderly supply of promotional items to be used at outreach events. This individual reports to the Library Events Manager. Works with the Library Events Manager to manage event requests, schedules and confirms events, assists with furniture layout changes, and contributes to the planning and hosting of other library-sponsored events. Assists with content creation and management for the Social Media Committee post plan. Supports special projects as assigned by the Library Events Manager, Outreach Librarian, and the Head, Library Communication & Outreach, including assisting with organizing and setting up displays and managing the promotional items supply. Assists with preparations for the library's presence at College for a Weekend, Experience LU, and other such events. Some evenings and weekend hours, especially during special events such as CFAW, will be required.

Facilities Student Assistant: enables the Jerry Falwell Library to deliver impressive customer service by working behind the scenes on projects such as setting up for special events; investigating and tracking facility-related work orders; and stocking supplies such as water, paper, toner, and first aid kits. This position requires the ability to perform physical labor, which involves moving furniture, lifting heavy objects, and standing for long periods. The job will occasionally require the use of tools such as a screwdriver, hammer, drill, etc. The individual must be able to receive instructions and complete tasks with little supervision. Occasional special event shifts are required. Reports and follows through on building issues and work orders. Sets up office equipment and library furniture for events, customers, and employees. Tracks and stacks inventory supplies including water, first aid materials, paper, toner, and printing supplies. Helps other departments with opening and closing procedures. Communicates professionally, including email, phone, and face-to-face interactions. Performs occasional cleaning.

Interlibrary Loan Assistant: supports the Interlibrary Loan staff with gathering, processing, and distributing library materials to customers. This position reports to the Interlibrary Loan Supervisor. Locates and retrieves books, audiovisual materials, and periodicals from the various library collections and areas. Scans articles/book chapters for customers. Uses Alma to check library materials in and out. Packages library materials being shipped to other libraries and distance learners.

Transports library materials to and from the Customer Service Center and ASRS, and delivers materials to faculty members' offices and/or departments.

Jerry Falwell Museum (JFM) Assistant: helps the Museum Curator with a variety of customer service, preservation, and organizational tasks. Provides outstanding customer service and tours to visitors while staffing the reception desk; answers basic questions; assists customers in requesting materials; and monitors customers' use of museum materials. Assists the Curator with organizing, arranging, and maintaining the JFM collections on exhibit and in storage. Assists the Curator in entering and retrieving items weighing up to 40 pounds from the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), and returning materials to the correct bin at the workstations. Enters data into databases, including MS Excel, works with digital files, and preserves documents by scanning into digital formats.

Library Systems and Technologies Student Assistant: supports and reports to the Library Systems Administrator. This employee works closely with the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) and other technologies housed within the Jerry Falwell Library. This position reports to the Library Systems Administrator. Provides basic computer troubleshooting. Performs duties related to the ASRS including bin auditing, shifting, picking, and resizing items. Develops content that can be applied to various library technologies such as digital signage, media wall, and interactive touchscreens.

Photography and Videography Assistant: contributes to the library's internal and external communications by aiding in the creation and editing of instructional and promotional videos and photographs to be approved by the Sr. Graphic Designer and Head, Library Communications & Outreach. This position reports to the Sr. Graphic Designer. Edits videos created by library staff. Assists librarians with creating and editing instructional videos on assigned topics. Creates original promotional videos to engage and inform library stakeholders. Takes high-resolution photographs of special events and library spaces as assigned. Videos special events. Performs other duties as assigned by the Sr. Graphic Designer and/or Head, Communications & Outreach, including providing tours during high-traffic events such as CFAW and other times as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND CREDENTIALSEducation and Experience
  • Required to be a current student in good academic standing.

  • Federal Work Study approved preferred.

Acquisitions and Cataloging Assistant:

  • High technical knowledge of MS Office 365 and other software required.

  • Ability to push book carts weighing 250 or fewer pounds is required.

  • Library experience preferred.

Administrative Office Assistant:

  • Experience with MS Office 365, including Word and Excel, is required.

  • Successful completion of UNIV 101 or equivalent is required.

  • Familiarity with standard office technologies and procedures is preferred.

  • Previous experience in an office or clerical environment, including copying, filing, and scanning, is preferred.

  • Successful completion of INFT, BUSI 201, or equivalent computer class is preferred.

Archives Assistant:

  • Able to lift 40 or fewer pounds and push carts weighing up to 250 pounds.

Collection Management Assistant:

  • Required to be able to lift 40 or fewer pounds and move book carts weighing up to 250 pounds.

  • Required to be able to work 12-18 hours weekly between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday.

Curriculum Library Student Assistant:

  • The ability to regularly push book carts weighing up to 250 pounds is required.

  • A grade point average of 3.0 or above is preferred.

  • One year of college education preferred.

  • Previous customer service experience preferred.

  • Second language proficiency preferred.

Customer Service Assistant:

  • A grade point average of 3.0 or above is preferred.

  • One year of college education preferred.

  • Previous customer service experience preferred.

  • Second language proficiency preferred.

  • Some knowledge of the Library of Congress classification and call number system is preferred.

Events and Outreach Assistant:

  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office products required.

  • Knowledge of and experience with the social media platforms Instagram, and Facebook is required.

  • One year of higher education preferred or strong background and training in event planning.

  • Public speaking and project management experience preferred.

Facilities Student Assistant:

  • Able to lift and move 50 or fewer pounds is required.

  • Basic computer skills are preferred.

  • Basic experience using hand tools is preferred.

Interlibrary Loan Assistant:

  • Required to be able to push book carts weighing up to 250 pounds.

  • Well-developed communications skills required.

  • Previous library experience preferred.

Jerry Falwell Museum Assistant:

  • Able to lift 40 or fewer pounds and push carts weighing up to 250 pounds.

Library Systems and Technologies Student Assistant:

  • Ability to develop apps is preferred.

  • Knowledge of computer languages is preferred.

Photography and Videography Assistant:

  • Must be currently enrolled as a Liberty student in high academic standing and not holding any other position at Liberty University.

  • Must have photography and/or videoing experience and be familiar with video and photo editing software.

  • Must possess well-developed communication skills.

WORKING CONDITIONSWork Environment

The working environment in which one will typically perform the essential functions of this position is a climate-controlled setting. It is well lighted and the noise level is moderate. The working environment may also include the facilitation of outdoor events.

Work Hours

This position is normally scheduled for 12-18 hours per week. Must be willing to work mornings and occasional special events.
