Overview

i3 is seeking an Instrumentation, Data System, and Controls (ID&C) Engineer to join our team for a once in a lifetime opportunity developing a unique and cutting-edge ground test facility. This new capability is being developed by a group of leading defense industry contractors across the United States and the task is to construct the first of its kind Hypersonic Wind Tunnel Test Facility. Project Phoenix represents a multi-million-dollar project involving the development, fabrication, system integration, implementation, and check out of a large-scale wind tunnel test facility to support hypersonic system technology maturation. This position can be filled at the Huntsville, AL location or the Tullahoma, TN location.
Responsibilities

  • Develop hardware assembly and wiring diagrams for control and data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with sound data system practices, ground test facility instrumentation, and integrated control systems.
  • Participate in the development of data acquisition system designs and control system designs
  • Develop control system software in PLC ladder logic, function block, HMI programming, etc.
  • Develop interfaces to test facility equipment using hardwired interfaces and industrial networks
  • Apply closed loop controls methods to control continuously variable systems using PID algorithms
  • Coordinate with other engineering discipline and departments to ensure success.
  • Evaluate current methods and procedures used at AEDC and recommend solutions for Phoenix.
  • Provide instrumentation selections based on requirements for all Phoenix systems.
  • Provide equipment recommendations and standard configurations for all Phoenix systems and work with each system engineer.
  • Provide problem solving support to field measurement techniques.
  • Support hardware assembly, fabrication, installation and checkout integrations with other subsystems and perform facility startup, checkout and commissioning.
  • Develop best practice documentation of field configurations to supply to technicians when installing and checking out system components (work instructions and maintenance procedures).
  • Work closely with functional, technical, vendor and subcontractor teams to create and implement industry leading solutions. This support is required onsite and by virtual meetings.
  • Coordinate and participate in CONOPS development.
  • Maintain technical expertise in all data and controls system computer hardware, software, interconnection, and interfacing.
  • Evaluate, report, and make recommendations on new data system and control system technologies to enhance the capabilities of i3 and its partners.
  • Must be willing to participate in continuing education in the form of training, courses, PDUs, and certifications.
Qualifications

Requirements:
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • BS degree in either electrical engineering, computer engineering, or computer science. Or a BS in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering with applicable data and control systems experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for degree.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills, understanding of system integration concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership and responsibility for systems.
  • Experience with working government contracts.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance (if needed), which requires U.S. citizenship.

Desired Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of LabVIEW, Microsoft SQL Server, C/C++/C#, Matlab, and Simulink.
  • 3+ Instrumentation and Data Acquisition system design and maintenance experience.
  • 3+ years of knowledge and experience with controls system development.
  • Familiarity with GE CIMPLICITY or other HMI/SCADA solution.
  • Ground test facility design, implementation, and maintenance experience.
