Position Title: Instructor - Truck Driver Training Program (Temporary, Part-Time)

Department: Pima Community College - Center for Transportation Training

Rate of Pay: $25.49/hour

Closed Date: April 20, 2023; 5:00PM Arizona Time

Position Summary:

Pima Community College offers preparation and professional truck driver classes for Commercial Driver Licenses (CDL). This position performs a variety of instructional duties by assisting Class A, Class B, and autonomous vehicle commercial driver license students in the classroom and at the truck driving range, via face-to-face and online modalities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide both classroom and road/range instruction in the Truck Driver Training Program
  • Conduct training in a flexible schedule and non-traditional format, including online
  • May teach theory and/or hands on skills
  • Assess and evaluate student skills and knowledge
  • Document performance and progress of students
  • Recommend and implement actions to assist students to accomplish goals
  • Maintain complete and accurate attendance and training records
  • Participate in marketing the program and recruiting students
  • Remain current with emerging trends in assigned area
Job Requirements:
  • Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) and one of the following:
  • A minimum of two years' experience driving a commercial motor vehicle requiring the CDL and appropriate endorsement(s)
OR
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a behind-the-wheel commercial motor vehicle instructor
The candidate must:
  • Meet Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration definitions of Class and Skill Instructor
  • Possess Class A Commercial Driver's License, current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, must pass DOT drug screen, have a "Driver Not Prohibited" standing in the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, have no serious moving violations for the past five years, and no felony convictions, or DUI convictions within the past ten years
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Principles and practices of teaching, training, instruction of adult learners, specific to truck driver training
  • Standards and trends in the truck driving industry job market and requirements for employment in that industry
  • Basic principles of supervision and training
  • Selection, use, and evaluation of instructional materials and equipment
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Instruct students within a non-traditional delivery system, including online teaching methods, to prepare students for employment and/or upgrade
  • Provide assistance and instruction to students on training related matters and training equipment and resources
  • Participate in the planning, developing, evaluating, and upgrade of competency-based training curricula
  • Work with individual and groups of students with different competencies and capabilities
  • Principles of teaching online
  • Employer engagement
  • Principles of assessment and data driven program improvement
  • Any or all of the following endorsements: passenger, hazardous materials, and school bus
Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions and fine finger movements - using fingers to manipulate/handle objects such as typing, sorting papers, activating buttons, or sorting/separating small parts.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods or moving from one work site to another.
