Position Description:

The Department of Music at Spelman College invites applicants for a one-semester, part-time instructor for the spring semester of 2024 to teach History of Jazz (SMUS 330) covering the evolution, cultural impact, and musical intricacies of jazz through the decades. The ideal candidate will create an engaging learning environment using effective teaching strategies and resources, ensuring a successful and enriching educational experience for students.

Key Responsibilities:
Plan and deliver engaging lectures and interactive class sessions on the History of Jazz, emphasizing key historical, cultural, and musical elements.
Develop a structured curriculum, including syllabus, course outline, reading materials, assignments, and assessments that align with the course objectives.
Encourage critical thinking and class discussions, fostering a dynamic learning environment that promotes active student participation.
Utilize various teaching aids and technologies to enhance learning and understanding of jazz history.
Evaluate student performance through assessments, projects, exams, and other relevant methods, providing constructive feedback and grades in a timely manner.
Adhere to institutional policies, guidelines, and ethical standards in teaching and academic conduct.

Qualifications:

Master's or higher degree in Music, Musicology, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
1 year of successful college level teaching experience, preferably in courses related to Jazz history
Strong knowledge of the history, genres, and influential figures in jazz music.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
A passion for fostering an enriching and stimulating learning environment.
Availability to teach in-person on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays during the specified time (13:00 - 13:50).
