The Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) is a dynamic area and supports innovation and excellence in teaching at the University of Denver, assisting faculty in a variety of ways including integrating accessible technological applications and supporting an emerging culture of integrating Universal Design for Learning to advance teaching and learning goals.

Position Summary

The Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) at the University of Denver seeks to hire for two Instructional Designer positions. One will be a permanent assignment and one is a temporary, 1-year long, opportunity with the option to renew based on availability of funding.

This is a full-time staff position with full benefits. The position will report to the Senior Faculty Developer of the Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) who reports directly to the Director of the Office of Teaching and Learning.

Instructional Designers will work collaboratively with OTL staff members and university faculty to design Canvas components of online, hybrid and hyflex courses and provide course design and technical support for DU faculty members. The successful candidate(s) will be versed in best practice in online and remote learning in higher education, implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and accessibility principles in educational technology, and utilize emerging technologies that support learning. The Instructional Designer(s) will play an active role in the many activities of the OTL, working collaboratively with DU faculty and staff to implement best practices for 21st century teaching and learning.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and procedures, the Instructional Designers' principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Course Development and Consultations:

  • Work with academic directors, other instructional designers, and subject matter experts using instructional design best practices to design, develop, and/or manage course development projects, with a particular focus on UDL and accessibility.
  • Review courses for alignment with established standards of quality including within the areas of accessibility and UDL.
  • Assist faculty through 1:1 training and consultations in course builds within the LMS, including but not limited to: course design, use of templates, uploading course materials, developing assessments, incorporating educational technology, and utilizing UDL principles.
  • Process requests for course reviews, transfers of course content, facilitating accommodations within the LMS, and other instructional design requests.
  • Assist faculty in meeting accommodations within the LMS including ensuring accessible course materials and providing assessment accommodations, in coordination with the Accessibility Technologist for Learning and Instruction.
  • Guide faculty in the use of our Canvas course accessibility checker, including supporting them in interpreting feedback and acting on recommendations.
  • Make referrals as needed to the Accessibility Technologist for Learning and Instruction for specialized accessibility cases.
  • Collaborate with departments and offices across campus to ensure continuity of faculty support.
Development of Educational Materials:
  • Create tutorials in the form of Knowledge Base articles, videos, or other asynchronous resources to support the use and adoption of educational technologies.
  • Provide expertise on teaching resources related to course design, effective use of educational technology, accessibility and UDL for the OTL online presence.
General OTL Support and Outreach:
  • Provides support for OTL activities, workshops, and programs as needed related to UDL, accessibility, and/or instructional design expertise.
  • Attend OTL and instructional design team meetings.
  • Coordinate with the Library and other support offices to ensure holistic faculty support for course materials.
  • Participate in educational campaigns, for example, visiting department meetings to help areas understand ID services.
Documentation, currency in the field, and other duties:
  • Engage in documentation and time tracking of consultations, projects, and other duties.
  • Maintain currency in the field related to instructional design, UDL, and accessibility.
  • Other duties as assigned including but not limited to using database and survey software for tracking and feedback purposes, representing the OTL at meetings and activities within DU, and engaging with professional organizations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of instructional design, in particular the integration of UDL principles.
  • Excellent organization skills and strong attention to detail to meet project expectations and parameters.
  • Excellent project management skills especially related to working in a team environment.
  • Ability to develop solutions for complex problems to improve processes.
  • Strong desire to learn and develop new competencies as needed.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities while adhering to deadlines.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, including in cross-functional teams, to complete projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience using an LMS, such as Canvas, Bb, or D2L.
  • Conversant in UDL and accessibility principles related to online and hybrid modalities
  • Experience using a wide range of instructional technologies
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in educational technology, instructional design/development, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university
  • Experience with accessibility remediation technologies, and supporting others in their effective use
  • Three (3) years' experience or more as an instructional designer in a higher education setting
  • Course development experience, especially with incorporating accessibility and UDL principles into online, hybrid, and hyflex delivery
  • Teaching or training experience, especially in a higher education and/or online environment
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. This position is not eligible for exclusive telecommuting but may be eligible for remote workdays in line with current university policy.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 10.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
