Job Description:
At The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) in the Bridge Division, you will be part of an organization that is responsible for planning, developing, designing, constructing, maintaining, and administering the state highway system. If unable to fill at the Highway Bridge Designer II level, NDOT will consider applicants at the Highway Bridge Designer I level.
Pay range for Highway Designer I-level: $22.686 - $33.442 per hour (with possible promotion as their experience grows). The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
Pay range for Highway Designer II-level: $26.220 - $38.651 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
Job Duties:
• Under limited supervision of a Registered Professional Engineer (PE), performs structural design work and technical geometric design work.
• As a member of the NDOT team, you will produce complex Geometric Designs/Details, in 2D or 3D using MicroStation, for a variety of bridge types used across the State of Nebraska.
• Conduct independent design checks and plan reviews of final plans prepared by co-workers to ensure completeness, accuracy, and adherence to design specifications.
• Verify all plans are in accordance with the Bridge Office Policies and
Procedures.
• Create plans for bridge repairs and special plans including reinforced box culverts, retaining walls, energy dissipators, and all standard highway bridge types.
• Communicate structural details with co-workers using MicroStation software.
• Review plans to ensure proper geometric layout, component fit, and that details are in accordance/congruence with the design.
• Review bridge plans prepared by consultants for both state and local projects for conformance with specifications and policies.
• Communicate with other Divisions within the department, other agencies, and branches of government, utility companies, consultants, and contractors to ensure proper plan preparation and to solve problems that develop during
fabrication and construction.
• Calculate accurately the bridge pay item quantities.
• Perform site inspections as needed. Investigate any field problems and provide solutions for the problems in a timely manner.
• Review shop plans provided by our fabricators for conformance and congruence with design plans and specifications.
• Stay involved with bridge projects from conceptual design through construction.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
