The Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for:

  • Carrying out day-to-day management of department safety activities and assist/advise plant operating and maintenance personnel with safety issues as required.
  • The development and continuous improvement of management system to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Coordinating the tracking of safety performance and compliance to required HSS programs and goals
  • Periodically spot check compliance systems for effectiveness
  • Providing strong field presence for the complex
  • Developing and facilitating required training for Safe Work Practices and Safety Leadership topics
  • Writing, modifying and driving the implementation of Health & Safety policies and procedures
  • Conducting health checks and audits for all Health & Safety policies and procedures
  • Managing the system for accurately reporting site and corporate statistics
  • Investigating safety incidents, collecting data, and preparing reports to agencies
  • Participating in Management Reviews, Pre-Work Safety Meetings, MOCs, PHSAs, PSSRs, CTA's, etc.
  • Communicating incident information, trends, and compliance issues
  • Serving as a resource for employees' and contractors' general safety questions
  • Mentoring refinery personnel and contractors in hazard recognition/mitigation, and in positive safety intervention techniques
  • Interpreting OSHA regulations
  • Interfacing with Production, Maintenance, Projects, Finance, Engineering and Technology and Human Resource Departments.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering, safety, or a science related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience working in a Health & Safety role at an industrial facility
  • Must be knowledgeable with OSHA regulations
  • Proficient computer application skills
  • Ability to handle multiple high priority assignments without compromising deadlines or compliance
  • Ability to communicate effectively

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Physical Requirements:
  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (respirator, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, heeled boots and hearing protection)

Other Requirements:
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis without the requirement of a work visa
  • Must currently hold or be able to qualify to receive a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card
  • Must support and comply with the company's drug free work environment, which will include random drug screenings
  • Must support and comply with the company's harassment free workplace environment policy
  • Must support and comply with the company's safety policies and initiatives
  • Must support and comply with the company's diversity and inclusion work environment policies
