The mission of the IU Bloomington Facility Operations is to operate and maintain a high-quality physical environment to enhance student learning, faculty teaching and research. We serve other non-academic departments, and we support the University's service to the community and citizens of Indiana.

Job Summary

Coordinates and leads hourly workers in routine landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks. Prioritizes and monitors work assignments, oversees equipment use, helps order materials, and other tasks.

Performs grounds maintenance functions in grass areas such as mowing including push and riding, edging, weed whipping, seeding prep, leaf and limb removal, pesticide application, and fertilizing and grass seeding. Prepares planting beds with hand and power tools; integrates soil amendments (trees, shrubs, and flowers); performs mulching, edging areas and pruning. Keeps parking lots free of leaves, soil, trash, and other debris. Performs sidewalk maintenance functions such as: edging, removal of trash, grass clippings, and limbs.

Diagnoses and treats plants and trees for pests and diseases. Follows planned landscaping designs to determine proper layout of plantings and stones. Drives truck to transport plants and materials/tools.

Performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure safety and continued use. Assists in set-up for campus functions. Operates necessary equipment to remove snow. Shovels snow and applies ice melt.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and two years of experience working in grounds maintenance or landscaping with demonstrated leadership skills.

Possess a valid Indiana driver's license with acceptable driving record and ability to be insured by Indiana University.

Ability to successfully complete required training programs. Ability to successfully lead people and manage work simultaneously. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of tools, equipment, techniques, skills, materials, and methods of landscaping and maintenance of lawns and formal plantings. Ability to lead, plan and organize the work of groundskeepers. Ability to determine and use the kind of tools and equipment needed for landscaping jobs, including ability to operate mowers, dump-bed truck, tractors, and skid-steer loaders. Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.

Working Conditions / Demands

Remaining stationary, traveling around work area, driving, climbing/ladders, squatting/kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling, twisting/bending, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds multiple times per shift. Spends most time outdoors with frequent exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for one hour plus. Possible exposure to distracting/uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of body or extremities. Risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts, electricity, and other factors. Possible exposure to fumes, odors, and other factors that may affect respiration and skin.
