Job Description

Full Stack Software Engineer - Apprentice - REMOTE

Why you want to work at Flexion:

We're looking for an apprentice Full Stack Software Engineer with an unwavering passion for building meaningful, easy-to-use applications. This is a limited term, 90-day apprenticeship program that could lead to a full-time position based upon your performance and Flexion's needs. We are looking for candidates with diverse backgrounds that are starting their career in Information Technology. Candidates that are passionate about software engineering and are early in their career are encouraged to apply.

At Flexion (an agile software company that's been delivering excellence for over 24 years), our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain self-sufficient and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems through collaboration-this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (research, content, business analysis, information architecture, etc.) as needed. Every member within a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team's success, which mirrors the company's overall flat structure.

What the job looks like:

Historically, Flexion has focused singly on hiring Sr. Level IT professionals with five or more years of experience. The purpose of the Flexion FlexUp program is to create a pathway for individuals to join Flexion that have fewer years of experience and less in-depth skill sets. We want to identify those exceptional individuals who we feel will be able to succeed at Flexion and to provide those individuals with opportunities that will accelerate their entry into the IT industry.

FlexUP candidates may be entering the first phase of their professional careers in IT after graduating, or they could be in a second or third career transition, or on an alternative career transition path in the IT industry. All such candidates are welcome regardless of career trajectory, age, or membership in any protected class. This position is 100% remote with rare exceptions for planning activities that will require travel.

You can expect the following:

  • A well designed, flexible 90 day training program coupled with extensive hands-on application development work
  • A senior level software engineer will be your guide and coach
  • Working within an agile software engineering environment using scrum
  • Pairing and mobbing with software engineers to collaboratively develop and refine designs, while providing feedback on proposed technical solutions that affect the user experience

Why we want to hire you:

You can design small pieces as you go, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole. You welcome change as a positive thing (instead of viewing it as "rework") and never look at anything you deliver as "final." You understand when "good enough" really IS good enough, without ever compromising on the overall product quality.

You have:
  • Completed a coding Bootcamp, Associate's degree (or higher) in Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • Self-motivated with strong communication and collaboration skill and instincts
  • Passion for learning new technologies and the ability to do so quickly
  • Ability to write high-quality code efficiently
  • Knowledge of Agile Software Engineering, Test Driven Development, and Continuous Integration/Deployment
  • Experience in multiple area of the following technologies:
    • Java, JavaScript, Typescript, CSS3
    • Java 8+ ecosystem and frameworks, Gradle/Maven
    • Single Page Applications frameworks (Angular, React, or Vue)
    • Experience with server-side scripting, e.g. Node.js or Python
    • Familiar with Docker
    • Familiar with AWS and Cloud development techniques and approaches
    • Familiar with Swagger, ReSTful JSON APIs, and JavaScript testing frameworks

At Flexion, we live by these principles:
  • Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
  • Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
  • Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
  • Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
  • Expect and vocally advocate for quality first
  • Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
  • Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
  • Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
  • Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
  • Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
