Full-Stack Developer

Reviewed/reviewed.com, a part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a talented developer with strong object-oriented skills to join us as we extend our unique homegrown publishing platform and work to scale with our quickly growing user base. Ruby on Rails experience is a plus.

We have gone beyond traditional publishing platforms to build a dynamic application to help consumers find the best purchasing options on the products we recommend. You can help to make this platform better.

We live by our mission: To help people buy the best stuff and get the most out of the stuff they own. Our recommendations and advice are trusted by millions because we put in the hard work, with rigorous testing and helpful, shareable stories that speak to a mass audience.

We're looking for a developer with knowledge of database design and hosting infrastructure. The right candidate is also interested in front-end UI and JavaScript applications and enjoys building useful software.

We are a small team that has a big impact. Our work reaches millions of readers. We have a lean, Agile workflow. We value continuous education, with weekly team discussions and book clubs. We value teamwork with encouragement towards pair programming for mentoring and problem-solving. Everyone in the team is encouraged to mentor and take leadership roles. We value open dialogue with value active input on designs decisions and improvement projects.

As part of Gannett, Reviewed is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workplace where employees are valued and reflect the diversity in the communities we serve.

This position is fully remote (we have an office in Cambridge, MA if that interests you) and reports to the Head of Product at Reviewed.

What you'll be doing:

  • Joining our team to pursue a redesign and improvement of our editorial platform.
  • Joining our small team where your experiences, ideas, opinions, and creativity are valued.
  • Participating in developer mentorship and pair programming to help bolster our team's technical ability.
  • Contributing to and improving the quality of our codebase via design discussions, improvement projects, individual contributions, and code reviews.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, data science, engineering, MIS or related technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • In-depth experience with Ruby on Rails (or other object-oriented languages), modern JavaScript frameworks backed by server-side data, SQL databases, and knowledge of system design, hosting infrastructure, and solid testing principles (we use RSpec).
  • Experience with optimization, performance, and scalability of complex architecture (front-back-end, caching, CDNs, asynchronous queues, vendor APIs) to deliver fresh content to millions of readers.
  • Experience with application deployment, management, and minimal dev-ops (Heroku, Fastly, S3).
  • Excellent communication skills in a distributed team environment and helping each other out with issues, sharing ideas, and pair programming.
  • Experience with agile methodologies, such as weekly development retrospectives, developer discussions, and knowledge sharing sessions.
  • Interest in crafting excellent user experiences, both for our readers and our editorial/publishing teams.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.

How to Apply:

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1. Your resume - one to two pages.

2. A cover letter with a short explanation of why this role is appealing to you.

It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.

Our Work Environment:

We're a small, fully remote team that values diversity of experience, whose work supports the editorial staff and business functions of Reviewed. We test products in our state-of-the-art lab in Cambridge.
