General Description:

Under general supervision, the Finish/Painting Specialist works with skilled journey-level Finish/Painting Assistants in the performance of general painting work. The work of the Finish/Painting Specialist is distinguished from the Finish/Painting Assistant by the additional responsibilities of providing lead work direction, laying out and coordinating the work flow for jobs, preparing material lists, and ordering supplies. The Finish/Painting Specialist primarily works as a skilled painter but has ancillary lead work with project planning responsibilities. The Finish/Painting Specialist provides paint finishing work to include sanding, glazing, staining and other types of paint finishes as well as trim carpentry work.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through three years of experience as a journey-level painter that included work coordination responsibilities. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to operate a forklift
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds and perform strenuous work requiring lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, and climbing
  • Public relations skills to deal with and coordinate efforts between departments and/or outside contractors
  • Ability to read and understand direction, equipment instructions, operating manuals and College procedures
  • Ability to write legibly and type accurately
  • Access to a telephone
  • Ability if needed to work irregular hours
  • Positive human relation and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently

Physical Demands/Working Conditions:

  • This position requires the person to occasionally exert up to 100 pounds of force and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • This position requires the person to frequently move about the various campuses.
  • This position requires the person to frequently communicate with and listen to Facilities Management staff to perform the essential functions of the position. Must be able to exchange accurate information in various situations.
  • This position requires the person to frequently remain in a standing and stationary position.
  • This position requires the person to frequently operate equipment that frequently involves repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
  • This position requires the person to occasionally ascend/descend a ladder, scaffolding, etc. to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • This position requires the person to frequently position self to move, lift, push, pull, work on, or operate equipment.
  • This position requires the person to judge, observe and assess the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations.
  • This position's essential functions are performed both indoors and outdoors. When working outdoors this person is subject to extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees) and extreme hot temperatures (temperatures above 100 degrees).
  • This position requires the person to communicate above ambient noise levels and exchange accurate information in various situations.
  • This position requires the person to frequently be exposed to hazards such as but not limited to: close proximity to moving mechanical parts and/or electrical current; working on scaffolding and high places; exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals, oils, and/or other cutting fluids.
  • This position requires the person to frequently be exposed to fumes, odors, dusts and gases associated building maintenance and operations.
  • This position requires the person to frequently perform essential functions in close quarters; crawl spaces; shafts; small, enclosed rooms; narrow aisles or passageways.
Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

Required Training:

College required quarterly training and associated assigned health and safety training

Work Hours:

7:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday-Friday with evenings, weekends, and holidays as required This position is a mission critical position and must be available for 24/7 recall
Ability and willingness to periodically work weekends and long holiday sessions for the performance of job function.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement):

  • Ability and willingness to periodically work weekends and long holiday sessions for the performance of job functions which require the facility to be shut down and for special events.
  • Working knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques including the ability to lead, instruct and coordinate work.
  • Ability to accurately estimate and prepare costs, supplies and materials needed for jobs
  • Ability to ensure work is performed in sequence.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade as well as knowledge of applicable state and federal building and safety codes and regulations
  • Experience in paint finishing work to include sanding, glazing, staining and other types of paint finishes
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn College infrastructure, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to interact and communicate in an effective and dependable manner, as well as establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with clientele such as students, staff, faculty and co-workers.
  • Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Assist as required and/or directed with snow and ice removal.
  • Drive College-owned vehicles, as required for performance of assigned duties
  • Perform other related work as required
  • Understanding of basic systems theory and operation including: electrical, mechanical, construction, plumbing, and heating/air conditioning/ventilation systems.
  • Rotate with the Building Maintenance and Operations personnel in their normal on-call schedule
  • Perform other related work as required

  • Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.
  • Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.
  • Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC's established safety and health procedures and practices.
  • Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation and shelter in place drills and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
