Overview
The Endoscopy Technician I have either no experience in endoscopy or is a novice in the endoscopy setting. The technician assists the nurses and physicians in providing care for the endoscopy patient. They must complete competencies for all basic GI procedures and scope reprocessing. The Technician also supports the area with duties that include, but are not limited to preparation of the procedure room and sterile field to ensure a safe patient care environment including gathering all required instruments and supplies and serving as an endoscopy procedure assistant. The job also includes transportation of patients and equipment, stocking/maintaining supplies, care and maintenance of endoscopes and their accessories contributing to the daily functions of the unit. They have strong sense of infection control in the GI setting.

Responsibilities
Core Responsibilites and Essential Functions

  • Patient Care
    1. Proficiency of all general endoscope procedures, equipment, and supplies including cleaning endoscopes and accessories.
    2. Fulfills all essential functions of the GI Lab Technician. Functions in all areas of the Endoscopy lab.
    3. Prepares for scheduled, emergent, urgent and add on endoscopic procedures by ensuring necessary equipment, instruments and supplies are ready and set up for use. Has the skill to expedite and organize the preparation for unexpected events, giving direction and support to the less experienced team members.
    4. Functions independently within scope of position. Anticipates needs of physician and RN during procedures; and anticipates needs of department.
    Must be proficient to operate all equipment in GI and provide technical assistance during procedures by trouble shooting equipment as needed, manipulating various pieces of equipment and the endoscope as directed by the physician.
    5. Required to take emergency call after normal operating hours and weekends rotation per department needs (specific to facility of employment.
    6. Demonstrates in depth knowledge of infection control principles and standards. Takes a proactive role in QI monitoring and improvement plans.

    1. Demonstrates effective and professional communication skills. Works as a collaborative team member.
    2. Assists with the planning of daily assignments and distribution of work to promote department efficiency.
    3. Assists in the trial and evaluation of new equipment and supplies.
    4. Functions in a manner that is aligned with Wellstar's pillar goals for quality care, patient satisfaction, professional standards, scope of the law, cost containment, efficiency and safety and quality.
    5. Maintains confidentiality.
    6. Supports evidence based practice and ethical accountability.
    7. Maintains current BLS certification.
    8. Maintains SGNA certification

  • Qualifications
    Required Minimum Education

  • High school diploma Required or
  • GED Required

  • Required Minimum Experience

  • No endoscopy experience is required.
  • Successful completion of 2-day system endoscopy education within 30 days of hire. Required and
  • Successful completion of on-the-job training with documentation of orientation and all competencies met (specific competencies determined by facility of employment). Required

  • Required Minimum Skills

  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language;
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills;
  • BCLS required.
  • Ability to collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care;
  • Competency in all aspects of GI procedures, patient positioning, exposure factors and radiation protection;
  • Ability to delegate to other team members as required;
  • Ability to multi-task is essential: Ability to function in stressful and emergent situations essential; Strong detail orientation required; Proficiency in all general GI procedures is required.
  • Computer skills may be required;
  • Emergency call coverage requirements specific to facility of employment.

  • Basic Life Support Required
  • BLS - Instructor Required
  • BLS - Provisional Required
