Position Overview

Our team is seeking to add an Electrical Engineer to its team in Richmond, VA.

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for providing leadership, direction and support in the design and maintenance of Electrical and Automation systems and controls. The incumbent guides and advises the activities of others engaged in activities related to electrical engineering, reliability/maintenance, automation, and controls to achieve overall plant goals relating to quality, throughput, and efficiency.

Responsibilities:

  • Utilize the principle of continuous quality and reliability improvement on a routine basis.
  • Identify areas of potential advancements in the processes, equipment, and facilities to achieve increased profitability through reduced costs, increased efficiency, improved quality, optimized equipment uptime and market penetration.
  • Work closely with the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, develop conceptual and functional requirements for short and long term process and equipment development (facility planning) consistent with the business plan.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and addressing electrical/automation/control issues which impede the achievement of Site goals related to safety, quality, efficiency, reliability and cost. Review related manuals, blueprints & schematic diagrams to decide on specific tasks to be performed.
  • Assignment to an on-call rotation to provide after-hours and weekend support as the need arises to assist maintenance in the troubleshooting and resolution of issues having an immediate impact on plant performance. This can involve providing direction/mentorship remotely and/or onsite.
  • Review Site equipment and technology for robustness, reliability and obsolescence. Where vital, develop plans for modifications and/or upgrades.
  • Compare alternatives and recommend to the Engineering/Maintenance Manager improvements regarding, quality, reliability, safety and environment.
  • Is responsible for analyzing projected financial impact of proposed process, equipment and facilities modifications.
  • Prepare and present robust capital expenditure estimates, schedules and requests, including sound financial analysis/justification, for management approval.
  • Is responsible for the full scope of electrical/controls projects including cost control, schedule, and compliance with safety and environmental requirements, to assure performance against expectations.
  • Develop, coordinate and lead external resources including contractors, vendors and engineering.
  • Participate as a member and/or leader in process development, continuous improvement and other problem-solving work teams.
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing to Site and group management regarding activities, potential issues and opportunities.
  • Functionally direct, lead and supervise maintenance technicians as needed - to resolve and prevent maintenance and engineering problems and to develop training programs on processes and equipment for the maintenance staffs.
  • Aid in developing the technical and process skills of the hourly maintenance crews.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers and other technical resources outside of the Site and Company
  • Provide functional and technical direction to plant maintenance and operating salary and hourly staffs.
Required Qualifications:
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering technology, Automated or Application Engineering; or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skills.
  • 2-5 years' of shown experience in electrical and/or controls engineering in an industrial manufacturing environment
  • Willingness to work in a self-managed team environment
  • Excellent written, verbal communication and organization skills with the ability to work well with contractors, customers, employees, and government regulatory agencies at all levels.
  • Basic understanding of capabilities for controls and servo systems and an understanding of maintenance procedures and principles of equipment reliability is vital.
  • Good methodical aptitude for equipment problem-solving and related issues.
Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience in PLC System Automation. and AutoCad software.
    • Experience in aluminum (or other rolling technologies) processing systems.
    • Experienced in trouble shooting mechanical systems including pneumatics, tooling issues, measurement feedback systems, and basic design robustness.
    • Competent with NEC Code
    • Understanding of motor branch circuits, 3 phase motors, & AC/DC drives
