Position Summary:

Reporting to The Johns Hopkins Hospital Chief Pharmacy Officer / Johns Hopkins Health System Vice President of Pharmacy Services, this position assumes a role in the identification, development, and implementation of innovative information technology-based solutions designed to continually improve the quality and safety of patient care services. The position partners with Health IT to deploy fundamental medication management supporting technologies, plans for current and emerging technology needs, and assures new and existing systems align with JHHS Departments of Pharmacy strategic goals and priorities. The Director of Pharmacy Informatics conceptualizes, plans, implements, and directs the provision of pharmaceutical care through information management. This includes involvement in assessment, review, selection, development, maintenance, support, and optimization of electronic systems to advance public health and patient care. The Director of Pharmacy Informatics must maintain positive working relationships with entity level departments of pharmacy across the health system and provides oversight and coordination of entity-based pharmacy informatics personnel through matrix-reporting relationships with individual Directors of Pharmacy. The position works collaboratively with the Chief Medical Information Officer, Chief Nursing Information Officer, and with leadership of the Health Information Technology Department and other affiliated leaders to establish priorities for applications within the EHR (i.e., Epic) involving medication use. The Director of Pharmacy Informatics plays a key role in change management and is responsible and accountable for the integration and harmonization of clinical practice with clinical information systems to improve practice across the Johns Hopkins Health System.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college of pharmacy resulting in a Doctor of Pharmacy degree is required. Completion of a post-bachelor's degree, such as an MS or MBA is preferred. Completion of an ASHP specialty residency program or equivalent experience in a related practice area is required.

Work Experience:

Requires 7-10+ years of progressively responsible related experience including 3-5 years of management experience with emphasis on clinical informatics; analytics; data, information & knowledge management; quality improvement; financial analysis; and patient safety.

LIcensure/Certification:

Current licensure as a pharmacist in the State of Maryland required. AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) Health Informatics Certification (AHIC) or similar is desired.

Knowledge/Skills:

Comprehensive understanding of trends in pharmacy-related processes and systems commonly used within a pharmacy department and how they interrelate with other hospital departments. Knowledge of medication-related data within the continuum of healthcare systems - including its acquisition, storage, analysis, use, and dissemination - in the delivery of optimal medication-related patient care and health outcomes. Application of management principles necessary to assess functions within areas of responsibility. Knowledge of personnel management, budget preparation, applicable regulatory standards, health care information technology systems and principles. Extensive understanding of patient safety principles as they apply to areas of responsibility.

High level of analytical ability associated with contemporary medication use systems and pharmacy practice. Understanding of trends in healthcare and demonstrated ability to adjust business strategies to maximize impact. Ability to work independently to uncover and resolve problems associated with pharmacy systems. Project management and coordination skills. Computer skills including use of spreadsheet and database applications. Interpersonal skills required to interact with pharmacy, medical, nursing, IT and administrative staff to facilitate the exchange of information and to resolve problems.
