JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer, the Director provides executive, technical, and operational leadership of Information Technology Services (ITS) Enterprise Systems.  The Director is responsible for creating, developing, and implementing strategies and policies related to the strategic planning, maintenance, support, and recovery of all enterprise server, storage infrastructure and associated operating systems; enterprise-wide Identity and Access Management services (e.g., Active Directory, LDAP, Single Sign-on services, Exchange and Messaging environment, etc.); and the planning and delivery of support services, (e.g., software deployment and distribution). In addition, the Director works closely with internal support groups and external constituents and is responsible for determining server maintenance schedules and ensuring that all servers have up-to-date operating system patches installed and are working properly.

For activities related to the above responsibilities, the Director interacts and coordinates with University administration, campus and Department technology directors, computing advisory groups, University and external technology specialists, and individual members of the University community.  The Director advises the CIO and other University technology administrators on infrastructure, security, storage and the appropriate operation thereof.  The Director coordinates and participates in high-level technology assessment, program planning and reporting for the University of Connecticut, and serves on the ITS Leadership team.  The Director maintains budget and staffing levels appropriate for activities with responsibility for staff planning, hiring, and assessment.  The Director attends conferences and training and interacts with external peers as required to maintain knowledge of current issues and best practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develops and maintains a long-term strategic plan and assigns goals for each area.
  • Provides leadership and direction for IT enterprise services at the University.
  • Oversees staffing, hiring, training, monitoring and evaluating job performance and discipline for employees and serves as the departmental representative for all union-related issues. 
  • Provides leadership and direction to the University on server infrastructure & security technology issues.
  • Develops and maintains budgets in conjunction with each area.
  • Works closely with the team leads to determine appropriate level and quality of services offered.  Works with each area to ensure the highest availability of service offerings.
  • Prepares periodic reports on the status of projects, operating budgets, and other activities and initiatives.
  • Provides oversight for the overall architecture of ITS' computing infrastructure.
  • Interacts with ITS senior leadership team, the IT planning committee, and leaders of IT working groups to ensure coordination of consistent application of policies and standards across all technology projects, systems, and services.
  • Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in high-level technology computing or related technology area;
  • Experience designing and supporting server infrastructure;
  • Experiencing supporting enterprise-wide directory services;
  • Experience with security technologies, best practices, and government regulation for compliance; 
  • Experience with enterprise computing centers;
  • Excellent and demonstrated skills in managing projects from initiation through completion, including the budget, timeline, and staff responsibilities;
  • Strong personnel supervision skills, including employee performance/evaluation, training and mentoring, communication and setting direction, and building effective work teams;
  • Demonstrated ability to act decisively and solve problems through creative and strategic thinking;
  • Ability to identify key issues in complex situations, evaluate options and initiate strategies for resolution;
  • Ability to translate long-term strategies into day-to-day operations with demonstrated experience in aligning resources with goals;
  • Proven leader with strong management and communication skills who is comfortable and effective with diverse university audiences;
  • Ability to build effective operational teams that emphasize teamwork, partnership and collaboration;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to develop and maintain constructive and professional relationships with a wide variety of individuals are required.

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum of five (5) years of higher education experience in a research-intensive university.     
  • Extensive experience with server and storage architecture is highly desirable.
  • Experience managing cloud computing resources, such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience managing disaster recovery for enterprise environments across multiple data centers.
