ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Director of Digital Campaigns in the Digital Department of the ACLU's National office in New York, NY.

An experimental, nimble and growing team, the digital department is responsible for online engagement of the rapidly growing community of ACLU supporters and the central role that community plays in the organization's long-term work and sustainability. The digital department works closely with national leadership as well as the ACLU's 54 affiliates.

Reporting to the Interim Chief Digital Officer, the Director of Digital Campaigns will have a passion for digital campaigns that leverage digital owned channels, including email and text, to acquire and retain engaged supporters. They should have a love of results-oriented data-driven strategy, and enthusiasm for the values and work of the ACLU.

With support from the Deputy Director, the Director will need experience leading the team from a marketing operations perspective. In partnership with the technology, analytics and fundraising, communications, advocacy and legal leaders at the ACLU, you will lead and execute email and text campaigns that help achieve both big, organization-wide goals along with niche and impactful wins. You will act as a trusted consultant, advising colleagues on how email, text and web-based digital campaigns strategy can best be used to reach their goals. You will teach the best practices of strategic digital-owned outreach to other departments and help them build the playbook for executing email, text, web conversion campaigns for their own advocacy, fundraising, and messaging goals. You'll also be a lead project manager, helping align internal stakeholders and external agency partners. You will oversee national and affiliate campaigns across digital owned properties from a collaborative, strategic vision to conception, to scalable testing and iterative optimization, to execution, and through analysis. You will lead a large team with several sub-focuses that serve the nationwide ACLU (both national and our 54 affiliates) and the varied priorities across the organization: fundraising, advocacy, organizing & engagement. In collaboration with Technology and Development partners, you will help achieve our $23 million C4 fundraising goal across digital-owned channels.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set an inspiring vision, strategy, and roadmap for the Digital Campaigns teams at the ACLU in alignment with the broader strategic goals of the ACLU. This includes working with leading strategy and decision making across owned channels with input and guidance from internal stakeholders and leaders to help the ACLU achieve its litigation, advocacy, communications, supporter engagement and fundraising goals
  • The Director leads nationwide coordination with stakeholders and determines the email and text calendar(s) driven by departmental goals and audience decisions
  • Partner with colleagues in Development to set fundraising targets with expense ceilings and to adjust the forecast and investment allocations, both rapidly and incrementally, to meet the moment at minimum across email and text channels
  • Align, prioritize, and oversee the execution of high-impact work by Digital Campaigns team members and related vendors across audiences, channels and national and affiliate program areas
  • Meet with ACLU colleagues to understand their campaign priorities and goals. Taking into account the overall calendar, audiences and goals, translate to develop a strategy and identify digital owned touchpoints smart that deliver on their intended results
  • Lead and champion the team members -- including the direct supervision of team leads -- supporting professional development and growth, giving feedback and ensuring project work is of high-quality and high-impact
  • Work closely with affiliate partners and provide guidance on their advocacy and fundraising campaigns. Work across departments and teams, in partnership with the Director of Paid Media, Director of Social & Store, Director of Product Management and Product Design to translate broader organizational goals into related email/text campaigns and effective paid media, social strategies and tactics, and to increase lead and donor acquisition as well as engagement across aclu.org, respectively
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external vendors to ensure text and email campaigns are executed to plan, this includes liaising closely with the Communications department in order to ensure messaging points are on-brand. This also includes making sure budgets are honored and the work is high-quality and represents good return on investment
  • Develop both recommendations and guidance for other teams who implement digital-owned campaigns, including overseeing quality assurance and providing ongoing guidance to our affiliates
  • Serve as the digital representative in Data and Privacy Working Groups in service of maintaining and growing effective marketing programs while honoring our policies and supporters
  • Act as a domain expert in-house and teach teams the best practices around digital-owned campaigns, often in collaboration with your paid counterpart, the Director of Paid Media
  • Support weekend strategic decision making for campaigns as part of a rotating coverage schedule. This includes off-hours work, as needed, for live coverage of high-priority events or rapid response moments
  • Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong experience in leading a large and matrixed team
  • Deep understanding of how digital marketing strategies and tactics can be used to reach, persuade, activate and convert leads and existing supporters
  • Hands-on experience with digital campaigns -- including planning, creative development, optimization, testing, reporting and analysis
  • Successfully worked with multiple clients (internal and/or external) to translate their goals and needs into effective digital campaign strategies, tactics, and creative
  • A leader committed to professional development and growth with a keen eye toward equity
  • Comfort working in a complex environment with multiple and at times competing priorities and goals
  • Excellent communication skills including presenting and succinctly reporting back on results
COMPENSATION

The annual salary for this position is $168,683 (Level D). This salary is reflective of a position based in New York, NY. This salary will be subject to a locality adjustment (according to a specific city and state), if an authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting. Note that most of the salaries listed on our job postings reflect New York, NY salaries, where our National offices are headquartered.
