Description

The University of Chicago Department of Music seeks a part-time Director of Chamber Music and Violin/Viola to start in academic year 2022-23.

Reports to: Director of Performance Programs

Background: The successful candidate will work within a large, well-established co-curricular Music Performance Program (PP) at the University of Chicago, which involves over 700 talented young musicians - most of whom are not music majors - in eighteen different performance ensembles and programs. The overall goals of the PP include: to provide a wide variety of enriching musical opportunities to UChicago students; to develop each student's individual proficiency and musical understanding to the highest degree possible; to foster a strong sense of musical community and a spirit of camaraderie within the PP; and to nurture each student's lifelong commitment to the musical arts, whether as participant, listener and/or supporter. Each member of the PP faculty is expected to ascribe to a teaching philosophy that emphasizes high expectations, positive reinforcement, constructive interaction, and productive dialogue between the instructor(s) and students.

Duties: Coordinate and oversee the Department of Music's well-established Chamber Music Program, which functions as an integral part of the comprehensive Musical Performance Program. Coach chamber music ensembles (including string quartets, string and piano groups, and other mixed ensembles), in-person and on a regular basis, for approximately 6 contact hours per week; recruit additional chamber music coaches as needed, and coordinate and track their coaching assignments. Schedule and oversee a quarterly series of instructional workshops, chamber music master classes, sightreading parties, and/or other events of interest to the overall pool of student musicians involved in the Chamber Music Program (approximately 3 events per quarter). Schedule student chamber music groups for performances on quarterly Tea Time Concerts and special Chamber Music Recitals throughout the year; pursue additional performance opportunities for chamber groups elsewhere on campus and in the community, as appropriate. Communicate regularly with students involved in the Chamber Music Program in order to promote their involvement and track their musical progress during the course of the academic year; submit all registration lists and grades in accordance with announced deadlines and procedures. Submit program information to Performance Program staff in accordance with announced deadlines and procedures. Monitor chamber music library holdings and plan for new acquisitions, as needed. Additional duties include minor committee service: for annual music lesson awards, biennial concerto competition, and occasional extra projects. Work with the Director of Performance Program on future planning and strategic development of the Chamber Music Program.

The Director of Chamber Music will also have the possibility of teaching private lessons on violin (and viola, if possible) to a select group of University student musicians, as student interest and the candidate's schedule jointly allow. Private lesson instruction is not in the duties of this lecturer position or its salary, as students involved in the Chamber Music program and other instrumental ensembles are not required to take private lessons. Any such lessons that might be arranged are compensated separately by the individual students.

Additional opportunities for greater involvement in the Performance Program - including leading quarterly string sectionals for the University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra, presenting a recital of solo and/or chamber music on campus, or pursuing other special projects - are also possible in conjunction with this position, in accordance with the candidate's interest and availability. Such services will be separately compensated, in accordance with their scope.

Qualifications

M.M. required; D.M.A. preferred; significant experience in chamber music performance, as well as broad knowledge of chamber music repertoire, required; evidence of successful student coaching, preferably at an undergraduate level, required; strong academic background in music history and theory preferred, along with an understanding of the precepts of a broad liberal arts education. Substantial experience and record of success as a performer of solo violin repertoire from the 18th through 20th centuries preferred. Orchestral experience preferred. Aptitude and experience in teaching private violin (and viola, if possible) lessons to students at various levels of accomplishment desirable. Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Regular presence on campus throughout three academic quarters required.

Part-time lecturer appointment, requiring approximately 1-2 days per week on campus during the regular academic year, October through May; no benefits included.

Candidates are required to submit the following materials:

  • Letter of application
  • Current curriculum vitae, including specifics of coaching, teaching, & performance experience
  • List of major solo and chamber music repertoire performed in public
  • A PDF including links to two recent recordings (preferably one solo and one chamber music selection)
  • Contact information for references (3 minimum)

All application materials must be uploaded electronically through the following link: apply.interfolio.com/107306

Review of applications will begin June 23, 2022 and continue until the position is filled or the posting is closed. On-campus interview(s) and audition(s) expected to be scheduled in July 2022.

Position contingent on final budgetary approval.
