Your Role:

The Director of Oncology Business Development will be part of the Global Business Development & Alliance Management team and will be responsible for executing strategic transactions for the Oncology Franchise. Under the framework of the Oncology strategy, the individual will work closely with the Franchise, BD and colleagues across all functions to execute transactions of multiple deal structures including in/out-licensing, co-development/commercial collaborations, combination studies, financing and M&A evaluation. In addition, he/she will support and/or drive the identification and evaluation of partnering opportunities as appropriate, lead cross-functional teams and will actively manage the assessment and communication of the business case. The individual will negotiate terms with partners and gain internal feedback and approvals from various levels within the company including senior management. Furthermore, this individual is a self-starter, be able to develop junior members of the BD team and work independently depending on the scope and complexity of the project.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the overall deal process and partner with Search, Evaluation & Due Diligence teams to evaluate external opportunities according to Oncology Franchise strategy
  • Orchestrate timelines and planning for the transaction process including scientific evaluation, commercial assessments, deal financials and terms
  • Proactively propose deal opportunities in connections with EMD Serono's Healthcare's oncology portfolio that increase competitiveness within the area of oncology and develop strategies for its implementation
  • Lead the development of innovative BD strategies for partnering (in- and out licensing) of assets and technologies in the field of oncology to seize momentum within the "bigger picture" of the biotech and pharmaceutical industry
  • Lead the assessments of potential partnering companies and assets as part of such strategy implementation, including the overall targeting and messaging of EMD Serono in its partnering approaches
  • Lead the business case development and financial models with other internal functions (Business Franchise, Controlling, Portfolio Management and Legal)
  • Be the lead negotiator to execute the envisioned partnering strategies for technology and assets in the field of oncology by:
    • Establishing and leading the partnering process and timelines to execute transactions in a timely manner
    • Preparing deal terms / discuss and gain internal buy-in on deal terms
    • Define the actual negotiation strategy and negotiating terms of licensing agreements with potential EMD Serono partners
  • Lead the negotiation of term sheets and full agreements in collaboration with legal and other functions as needed
  • Bringing recommendations to senior management review and managing the governance process including board level approvals to ensure effective and timely decision-making
  • Manage a joint communication by preparing and delivering of presentations as appropriate to internal committees jointly within R&D, Franchise, Executives, and BD colleagues
  • Internal & external communication
  • Professionally represent BD internally to build coalitions across businesses and disciplines by building and managing collaborative relationships across the EMD Serono organization
  • Professionally represent EMD Serono globally in discussions with partners and at industry events to build-up global peer networks for EMD Serono'sbenefit in deal making
  • Demonstrate thought leadership on BD-topics in such communication formats internally as well as externally
  • Assemble deal teams for strategy implementation to allow for efficient deal closure processes
  • Drive performance of deal teams and co-workers by establishing an open-minded and constructive feedback culture

Who you are:

  • University degree: PhD or advanced degree in science or engineering preferred, MBA from top level university preferred
  • Fluency in English (both verbal and written) is essential, knowledge of additional languages including German is a plus
  • 10+ years industry experience with 6+ years in the Business Development function
  • Highly collaborative- and agile mindset
  • Strong project management with excellent organizational and leadership skills; ability to lead / contribute multiple projects and teams simultaneously
  • Strong understanding of valuation, strategically and financially; strategic and analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Outstanding time management, project prioritization and demonstrated delivery of consistent high-quality work on-time in a fast-pace and changing environment
  • Expertise in deal structuring, contractual frameworks and governance,
  • Proven track record of strong negotiation and closing of large, complex and strategic transactions; demonstrated approaches to structuring deals that maximizes value for EMD Serono an affiliate of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germanyand partner as appropriate
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, in particular at presenting findings, summaries and recommendations to senior management in a concise and relevant manner
  • Strong experience working in a large, complex, global organization where working across functions, cultures and leading through influence are keys to success
  • Knowledge in Oncology including drug research & development and the competitive environment
  • Established network of contacts in key academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies
