About the Opportunity

This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]

This Director position is within the Customer Engagement group, and reports to the VP, Customer Engagement. It can be located at any FE location.

This position will be classified as a hybrid role.

The Director, Energy Efficiency Compliance & Reporting group has primary responsible for developing the business strategy, program designs, budgets, processes, and regulatory filings necessary to achieve federal and state compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements for energy efficiency and demand response activities across all FirstEnergy utilities in OH, PA, MD, NJ, and WV. The position is also responsible for promoting enhanced customer engagement and customer affordability through well-designed energy efficiency and demand response programs.

The position directs the activities of managers, professional staff, and industry consultants who oversee energy efficiency and demand response program design, evaluation, measurement and verification activities, PJM capacity market participation, and regulatory compliance activities. The position also oversees the Companies' Utility Energy Service Contract activity with federal government customers. This position is also responsible for managing relationships with Public Utility Commission or Board Staff and external stakeholders involved with the energy efficiency and peak demand reduction program requirements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Energy Efficiency Compliance and Reporting Department in the design and development of energy efficiency and demand response programs and plans to achieve energy efficiency and peak demand reduction regulatory requirements, and FirstEnergy Customer Engagement objectives across all FirstEnergy Utilities in OH, PA, WV, MD, and NJ.
  • Ensure all regulatory requirements for energy efficiency and demand response programs, PJM capacity market participation, and Utility Energy Service Contracts are understood and followed by all professional staff, consultants, and vendors.
  • Oversee the development of Energy Efficiency and Demand Response Portfolio Plan strategy, regulatory filings, testimony, and case strategy to ensure State Commission approvals
  • Oversee Evaluation, Measurement and Verification responsibilities to accurately measure energy and demand savings impacts from programs that meet regulatory scrutiny
  • Oversee the tracking and regulatory reporting of program savings and financial performance to demonstrate state and PJM compliance requirements.
  • Develop and promote FirstEnergy strategies and positions in regulatory settings to help shape reasonable energy efficiency and demand response requirements, as well as full recovery of program costs, lost revenues, and performance incentives.
  • Oversee the strategy and processes for energy efficiency and demand response capacity resource offers into the PJM capacity market.
  • Oversee the execution of Utility Energy Service Contract activity to assist federal government customers with energy efficiency and resiliency efforts.
  • Drive energy efficiency and demand response program and plan process synergies between OH, PA, WV, MD and NJ through consistent program development efforts.
  • Continuously monitor program performance and recommend changes to maximize energy efficiency and demand response savings and cost effectiveness.

  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained to meet organizational goals
  • Provide consistent and clear direction through effective communication of company and business unit goals
  • Engage staff in development of department specific initiatives
  • Encourage and support employees to think creatively and develop innovative ways to meet and exceed goals
  • Effectively lead and delegate responsibilities to ensure everyone is part of the team and is contributing while adding to employee's development and well-being
  • Develop the business units long term strategy and goals; align the business unit to achieve FirstEnergy's strategic objectives
  • Prepare succession plans and identify career paths for employees that allow progression
  • Work with employees to identify professional goals and objectives within development plans
  • Provide regular and routine feedback on performance while recognizing employee accomplishments and providing coaching for improvement and/or corrective actions
  • Communicate effectively to employees
  • Partner with Human Resources to administer policies and regulations fairly and equitably for all employees
Financial and Fiscal Management:
  • Review and analyze budget performance monthly to identify, explain and report variances
  • Make sound financial and business decisions based on the company's goals and targets
Qualifications include:
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Technical, or similar discipline required.
    • MBA or advanced degree is preferred.
  • Ten (10) years relevant work experience at progressively increasing levels of responsibility is required.
    • Relevant work experience to include strategic plan development and execution, utility regulatory process and policy understanding, and demonstrated customer focus.
  • Demonstrated management & leadership experience required
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, teamwork, relationship building, and management skills are required
  • Demonstrated ability to function with minimum direction using a broad range of discretion to meet strategic objectives.
  • Broad background within the electric utility industry preferred
  • Strong business and financial acumen, with a proven track record of managing organizational change
  • Demonstrated change management skills are preferred
