Position Summary

A department of the Development Office, which is responsible for College fundraising, the Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) office has the primary responsibility of raising funds for College priorities from corporations and foundations. The Director leads this effort by directly engaging in an supervising CFR staff in high-level fundraising activities.

Specifically, the Director: researches, identifies, and cultivates funding prospects for projects aligned with College priorities; collaborates with senior leadership, faculty and other key administrators to identify, articulate and devise grant projects and budgets; coordinates and staffs on- and off-campus meetings and site visits between corporate and foundation leaders and senior leadership, including the President; establishes effective working relationships with foundation program officers and corporate contacts; ensures adherence to College policies in grantseeking and manages approval processes for all institutional grant proposal submissions; prepares and submits institutional grant proposals and concept papers to secure funding commitment ranging from four to seven figures; serves on program teams for major grant projects, as appropriate; and ensures timely stewardship for corporate and foundation donors, including for endowed funds established by institutional donors. All of these activities involve close collaboration with senior faculty and staff as well as some interactions with College Trustees.

The Director advises the Assistant Vice President and Vice President on annual fundraising goals; based on data analysis and activity planning; manages the CFR Department's operating budget; supervises, develops, and manages and mentors a full-time Associate Director and half-time Assistant Director, plus 1-2 work study sutdents. This individual also considers succession planning and promotes cross-training of CFR staff.. The Director collaborates closely with the Office of Sponsored Research on areas of overlap with faculty grants, the Office of Post Award Services on grant accounting and management through Workday, and grants staff in the Wellesley Centers for Women. As appropriate, and with approval from the Assistant Vice President, the Director collaborates with principal investigators to prepare and submit government proposals for instiutional projects. The Director also: ensures the accurate maintenance of CFR records inAffinaquest as well as internal tracking documentsaand oversees the day-to-day management of the CFR office.

In addition, the Director supports the Development Office's fundraising operation by: helping individual giving officers with proposal development for individual asks; editing individual proposals; and making language and content readily available to the team for use with other fundraising initiatives.

This position requires excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to work independently and with good judgment, strong and collaborative interpersonal skills, experience working with colleagues at all levels, and the ability to undertake multiple tasks simultaneously. The Director is the senior member of the Development team with responsibility for CFR, taking on additional Development Office responsibilities as needed. The Director serves as the main point of contact for CFR-related questions and information requests from both internal and external constituencies and represents the CFR office at professional meetings, conferences and special events. The Director serves as a liaison to faculty and administrators on responsibilities relating to grant administration and grant reporting and serves as the "central clearinghouse" for proposal submissions and grant tracking. Through this work, the Director works to meet the CFR office's goals of raising increased funds and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external constituencies in which the CFR office serves as a source of both information and support.

Primary Position Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement solicitation strategies for corporations and foundations - work with academic and administrative departmentsto develop program and project descriptions; write and submit proposals, concepts papers, and letters of inquiry; develop grant proposal budgets; track proposals submitted and results. Develop and maintain relationships with foundation program officers and corporate contacts. Plan and make visits to corporations and foundations, often accompanied by senior leadership and/or facultyand support on-campus site visits. Develop and submit government grant proposals for institutional purposes, as appropriate.
  • Oversee CFR Department - Advise on annual fundraising goal and track progress on a quarterly basis; supervise and mentor full time Associate Director and half-time Assistant Director and serve as main liaison to the Business Leadership Council for the Assistant Director's other half of job; consider CFR Department's succession planning and promote cross-training; supervise 1-2 work study students; oversee day-to-day management of the CFR office.
  • Oversee stewardship activities for corporate and foundation donors - these activities include: the preparation of acknowledgment letters for new grants/gifts and payments; ensuring that grants and gifts are properly recorded and set up in Affinaquest and Workday Grants Module; maintaining a calendar of stewardship report deadlines; collaborating with academic and administrative departments to monitor the progress of projects and gather information for reporting; the preparation and submission of stewardship reports; working with Post Award Services to track grant expenses and prepare financial reports. As needed serve on the program team for major grant projects, such as HHMI and the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
  • Research, identify and cultivate corporate and foundation prospects - oversee prospect research activities, supervising the Assistant Director and work-study students; regularly review periodicals, RFP listings, and news updates for new funding opportunities; participate in the collaborate SCAFRO network to monitor CFR activity at peer schools; work with Development staff to identify Wellesley connections to potential donors; strategically pursue strong prospects and implement appropriate solicitation strategies.
  • Serve as liaison to Development staff and point person for information about programmatic goals and priorities; maintain close relationship with senior leadership, faculty, and administrators across campus and share language and information with Development colleagues as appropriate; partner with individual giving officers to capitalize on alumnae connections to corporations and foundations and family foundations with alumnae connections; help with individual proposal development and editing, along with other Development writing projects, as needed.

Performance Profile
  • CFR Office directly submits at least 30-35 new grant proposals per year for key institutional priorities.All major CFR prospects are actively in the appropriate stage of cultivation, solicitation, or stewardship.
  • Stewardship, proposals and acknowledgment corresponsence are completed on time, are accurate and of high quality.
  • The CFR Office has the trust of senior leadership, faculty, Development colleagues, other constituencies because of its professionalism,responsiveness, and strategic management of funding prospects.

Education Required
  • B.A. requires.

Experience Required
  • At least 10 years of corporate and foundation relations/grant writing experience required, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated success in securing grants and gifts up to seven figures also desired.
