Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Dean for the College of Engineering, the Director of Budget and Finance provides fiscal leadership to ensure responsible and appropriate fiscal management of the College of Engineering's resources. This position oversees and directs grant accountants with research administration and severs on the College leadership team.
Essential Functions:
Administration:

  • Oversees college budgeting, including permanent and temporary allocations, and reporting of operating funds.
  • Supervises Research Administrators to ensure grant compliance and proper grant financial analysis.
  • Advises, educates, and serves as an internal consultant for faculty and senior management on budget and financial issues.
  • Develops long-term financial forecasting and strategic financial analyses to inform budget development. Implements new and existing budget priorities and strategic initiatives.
  • Supervise staff; assign projects, manage workload, provide training and identify relevant professional development opportunities and conduct annual evaluations and goal settings.
  • Manages finance and budget processes and procedures.
  • Leads and facilitates communication with the business office staff regarding best practices in policies and procedures.
  • Attends meetings as a member of the College's leadership team and provides information as requested regarding budgets and processes.
  • Serves as the fund source manager and reconciles appropriated college accounts.
Financial Responsibilities:
  • Manages personnel budgets, including salary savings, and carryforward.
  • Develops and monitors financial reports which provide critical financial information not available with standard university reports.
  • Identify opportunities for streamlining processes and improving efficiencies within the organization.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Knowledge of budget development and monitoring.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and personnel management practices.
  • Experience interpreting and applying laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting complex documents and situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build positive working relationships with varying levels of authority.
  • Ability to effectively present and articulate complex concepts in a simple and understandable fashion.
  • Ability to use independent judgement to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload/projects.
  • Highly organized with superb attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and the ability to learn and use new software systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus 8 years' of progressively responsible professional experience in similar work, including five years of managerial experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of post-award grant functions, including budget and expense analysis and reconciliations.
  • Familiarity with research grant activities and requirements.
  • Experience working in higher education.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary range of $81,702.40 to $100,921.60 annually, depending on experience.
