This is an exciting opportunity for a collaborative leader with both a keen understanding of the education landscape and a record of scholarship and research to join California State University, Monterey Bay as the next Dean of the College of Education. Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the chief executive officer of the College of Education. The Dean works with faculty and staff to represent the College's departments, programs, offices, and centers; oversees strategic planning, advancement, and budget development; and guides resource allocation, teaching, research, service, outreach, and administration.

The Dean also provides leadership and advocacy for faculty and staff recruitment, professional development, evaluation, and retention; enrollment planning, student recruitment and retention; program review and accreditation. In addition to supporting shared governance and promoting a diverse and collegial environment, the Dean actively encourages and supports cross-department and cross-College collaboration in teaching, creative activity, and scholarship.

The Dean serves as a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, working collaboratively with a highly collegial team of deans and academic affairs administrators, and serves as a member of the President's Extended Cabinet.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include:

  • Advancing the mission and vision of the University and the College of Education in a collaborative, equitable, and inclusive environment that values diverse perspectives
  • Providing leadership and advocacy for strategic and budgetary planning, enrollment planning, student recruitment and retention
  • Overseeing faculty and staff recruitment, professional development, evaluation, and employee relations
  • Promoting interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, inter-college and internal collaboration, cooperation and research, including Extended Education and International Programs, as well as with external partners
  • Leading development and fundraising efforts for the College, collaborating with University Advancement, and engaging in university, community and alumni relations;
  • Promoting excellence and innovation in the scholarship areas of teaching, creative and research activities, professional application, and university service for faculty; and
  • Overseeing the educational effectiveness of the College's academic programs through the assessment of student learning and program review and renewal processes; upholding standards of rigor and academic excellence; and overseeing and facilitating internal and external

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The ideal candidate will have skills, knowledge, and leadership experience in the following areas:

  • Implementing outcomes-based education and assessment of student learning;
  • Service learning, community partnerships, and/or field-based experience in teaching and learning;
  • Establishing and stewarding partnerships with local/regional PK-12 institutions, service agencies, and community colleges;
  • Working with Interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary approaches to higher education;
  • Developing instructional programming with Professional and Continuing Education;
  • Engaging in instructional programming supporting Internationalization; and
  • Engaging in innovative technologies in learning environments, and the use of technology for improvement of teaching and learning.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in education or an allied field taught in the College of Education (such as education, human development and family science, school psychology, speech and communication disorders among others);
  • At least five years of progressive administrative experience as dean, associate dean, department chair, or comparable higher education position in an area as suggested above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An Educator and Scholar whose academic achievements include a record of sustained scholarly and pedagogical achievements assessed through a Retention, Tenure, and Promotion process; these achievements must be commensurate with appointment at the rank of full professor in the College;
  • An Academic Administrator with demonstrated experience in transparent budget development and strategic budget management; knowledge of strategic enrollment and planning; understanding of organizational structures; ability to implement the University's strategic priorities; ability to determine, effectively allocate, and coordinate resources to address the needs of a growing university; supports and moves new initiatives forward. Identifies current and future challenges and proposes effective solutions. Leads courageously by addressing difficult issues;
  • A Student-Centered Academic Leader and Advocate who understands the value and importance of multiculturalism and social equity. Experienced in developing academic programs specifically designed to address the learning needs of an ethnically-, culturally-, and linguistically-diverse student population. Appreciation for the role of scholarly research in the teaching and learning process, at both the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • A Visionary Leader who understands the university's mission and vision and how the department/division work activities and goals support the mission; can develop and sustain strong and collegial relationships with faculty, students, staff, and administrators; balances advocacy with the needs of the wider campus community; provide leadership, stability, unit coherence, and strategic direction; can garner community and donor support for programs in the college;
  • An Innovator with a demonstrated understanding of new paradigms and innovative pedagogies in higher education, including technology-enhanced and online learning strategies; values an interdisciplinary community;
  • A Decisive and Diplomatic Leader with strong organizational and consensus-building skills, integrity, and the ability to inspire and lead faculty with diverse interests; values collaboration, community-building and shared governance; seeks widespread participation in decision-making; models integrity, ethical reflection and practice; mentors and fosters leadership skills in others; takes a leadership role in faculty/employee relations and performance; and creates a culture of civility and respect among faculty and staff.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • The person holding this position is considered a "mandated reporter" under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
  • This position will have a duty to report to the Campus Title IX Officer information pertaining to victims of sex discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, and stalking as required by CSU Executive Order 1083.
  • This position has been designated as a sensitive position with responsibility for the care, safety and security of people (including children and minors), animals and CSU property; authority to commit financial resources of the university through contracts greater than $10,000; access to, or control over, cash, checks, credit cards, and /or credit card account information; responsibility or access/possession of building master or sub-master keys for building access; access to and responsibility for detailed personally identifiable Level 1 confidential information about students, faculty, staff or alumni that is protected, personal or sensitive as defined in the CSU Information Security Data Classification Standards.
  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority, will be required to participate in annual training, and to immediately forward to University Police all reports of Clery Act crimes brought to their attention.
  • This position is required to comply with confidentiality requirements outlined in the Department of Education's Family Educational Rights and Privacy and California's Educational Code Chapter 13 regarding sensitive student issues.
  • This position is a designated position in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the University's liability coverage.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.

COMPENSATION:

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $15,257 - $17,800 per month

Living in the Area

CSUMB is the closest CSU to the beach, just one mile from the Pacific Ocean and its beautiful sandy shores. The Monterey Bay area enjoys temperate weather all year round and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation such as kayaking, surfing, hiking, golfing, and mountain biking. Minutes away from amazing natural wonders including Big Sur and Point Lobos, as well as world-famous destinations like Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Pebble Beach, the campus is also close to the Salinas Valley, Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley, and the San Francisco Bay area.

Adjacent to campus, Fort Ord National Monument encompasses 14,000 protected acres located on the former Fort Ord military base. The land includes more than 80 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and watching wildlife in their natural habitat. It's home to 44 species of rare plants and animals. Trails are open daily from dawn to dusk and run through a range of environments, from grassy hills to coastal shrubland.

CSUMB is just minutes away from some of the most beautiful scenic areas and amazing natural wonders in the world. College of Science students have opportunities like none other because of our proximity to the extraordinary living laboratory of Monterey Bay. The university offers one of the only diving programs in the country with entry through leadership-level diving certifications, as well as scientific research operations.

About 30 miles south of campus, just off Highway 1, lies the majestic stretch of land known as Big Sur. Bordered by the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Big Sur "offers unmatched scenic beauty and is famous for its breathtaking coastline, towering redwoods and epic hiking trails," according to the Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

CSUMB sits halfway between the Monterey Peninsula, with the coastal communities of Pacific Grove, Monterey, Seaside and Carmel, and the Salinas Valley, known as the "Salad Bowl of the World" for its abundant agricultural production.

Less than 10 miles from campus, the city of Monterey dazzles with iconic attractions and famous landmarks. Places like Cannery Row and Old Fisherman's Wharf, which inspired John Steinbeck's novels, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium draw visitors from around the world.

Take a two-hour drive north to reach San Francisco, one of the most visited cities in the world. San Francisco brims with history, museums, famous attractions, and landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Chinatown, and historic cable cars.
