Bowie State University (BSU) invites nominations, expressions of intent, and applications for an exceptional leader to serve as the Dean of the Bowie State University Graduate School.

With oversight by the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of the Bowie State University Graduate School monitors, develops, and implements policies, procedures, and practices designed to ensure the effective delivery of academic programs at the masters and doctoral levels. Fostering a graduate culture in which programs can grow and students can be successful, the Dean provides appropriate leadership in campus and school wide initiatives that focus on improving graduate student retention and graduation rates. This position also provides leadership in the areas of strategic planning, academic program review, evaluation, and assessment as part of the university's institutional effectiveness system.

Founded in 1865, BSU is Maryland's oldest HBCU and one of the ten oldest in the country. As a member institution of the University System of Maryland, BSU upholds the system's mission of providing high-caliber, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities. Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation's top 20 HBCUs, BSU provides high-quality and affordable educational opportunities for students with ambitions to achieve and succeed. BSU offers 27 undergraduate majors, 36 master's, doctoral and advanced certification programs with special focus on science, technology, business, education, and related disciplines. The Dean of the Bowie State University Graduate School will play a critical role as BSU aspires to step up and move in the Carnegie Classification to a Research 2 (R2) institution.

Bowie, Maryland is a vibrant and welcoming city nestled between DC, Annapolis, and Baltimore. The Dean of the Bowie State University Graduate School is expected to have a terminal degree from an accredited university in an appropriate discipline and experience in management leadership roles. Individuals should have held a tenured senior level faculty position for a minimum of seven years (preferred). It is expected that candidates can articulate and establish a clear, forward thinking strategic vision in terms of redefining and reinvigorating the role of graduate education in the 21st century.

A successful candidate will have:

  • A comprehensive knowledge of university policies and procedures relating to the development and implementation of academic programs, as well as prior management of educational support programs.
  • The ability to effectively supervise others, to think creatively in resolving problems and proposing changes, along with demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
  • Dynamic leadership, superior communication skills, and a demonstrated dedication to student and faculty services.
  • Strong management skills, including stewardship of fiscal and human resources.
