The Credit Risk Review Director (\"Director\") leads the internal Credit Risk Review (CRR) function, team, and programs including overseeing file review work, regular reporting, participating in examinations, risk analytics, and credit metrics trending. Provides independent, objective, reliable, valued, and timely assurance to the Board of Directors, Enterprise Risk Management Committees, the Chief Risk Officer, the Chief Credit Officer, senior management, and regulators of the effectiveness of credit risk management and the ability of the Bank to identify, monitor, and mitigate current and emerging credit risks.

Responsibilities include oversight of continuous & targeted review results across commercial and consumer credits of all types and complexities, review of portfolio and industry information, interaction with line and credit teams, and proposing pragmatic solutions to risk and control issues. Leads special projects, including defining scope, testing details, and timelines.

The Credit Risk Review Director will be curious, analytical, and confident, with a drive to challenge the status quo and to overcome obstacles. The Director will be open to changes to business processes, systems and technology, job roles and/or organization structures. Effective relationship-building, leadership, and communication skills will be critical to success.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Manage the CRR department and program including personnel-related tasks, administrative duties, and business partnerships
  • Achieve CRR program requirements (e.g. coverage, reporting)
  • Assess the effectiveness of the credit risk processes and standards of the Bank to promote loan growth strategies in a risk appropriate manner
  • Ensure effective and efficient loan review testing, inclusive of credit file reviews, completion of necessary line sheets, while also sustaining a strong CRR quality assurance program to ensure the consistency and accuracy of CRR work products and review results.
  • Provide regular reporting that summarizes portfolio segment ratings, critical exceptions cited, and recommendations issued, as well as an independent assessment of overall credit quality, risk trends, industry trends, impact of macroeconomic conditions, and total exposure reviewed for each segment
  • Communicate findings to line of business partners and senior leadership
  • Follow up and track recommended remediation from prior reviews
  • Participate as Co-Chair to Credit Risk ERM Committee; key participant in new processes, products, or initiative reviews
  • Seek out opportunities to enhance bank-wide credit risk topics, provide guidance, educate, and increase awareness around these topics
  • Benchmark best practices with peer institutions and incorporate into CRR procedures as appropriate
  • Maintain awareness of regulatory guidance relative to lending practices and credit risk topics and communicate such information
  • Ensure credit culture is consistent throughout organization and represents approved credit risk appetite objectives

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed to Perform Essential Functions of the Job:
  • Bachelor's Degree - Business, Finance, or Accounting
  • 10 years of credit risk experience within a banking company working with Commercial (C&I & CRE) loan/credit review, credit analysis/ underwriting, and/or portfolio management with at least 5 years in a managing role
  • Fully conversant in credit policy matters with proven sound judgment and understanding of industry, market, and economic trends
  • Strong leadership and project management skills, with the ability to coordinate and manage review teams and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships, to exert influence without direct authority, to listen well and be willing to consider the opinion and perspectives of others, and to effectively resolve conflict
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify root causes, to generate well supported conclusions based on trend analysis and statistics, and to anticipate horizon issues
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to audiences of varying levels of seniority
  • Excellent language skills, with ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business journals, financial reports, legal documents, and regulatory issuances
  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, and data visualization tools like Tableau or PowerBI

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
  • Credit risk or loan review certification
  • Formal credit training
  • Prior experience in commercial regulatory examiner role
  • Experience in taking a hands-on approach and working across the organization to research, define and execute on initiatives

Level of Complexity and Scope:

Degree of Independence and Decision-Making:

Required Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership to Credit Risk Review Specialist positions, including, but not limited to coaching, training, and motivating
  • Position will lead and manage a team (hiring staff, coaching, training and conducting performance reviews etc.

Physical Requirements:
  • Some out-of-town travel may be required (less than 10% of the time)
  • Must be able to operate a compute and interact with standard office equipment / applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.) Position will require standing, sitting and walking
