Job Description

The Data team within General Motors Legal Staff leads global legal support for GM's growing number of data-intensive matters, focusing on privacy, cybersecurity, and on general legal support of the following business units: Global Connected Services, Customer Experience, and GM's Chief Data and Analytics Office. Counsel is expected to efficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously, collaborate effectively across the legal team, and navigate through ambiguity to find pragmatic solutions for GM's diverse business clients.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Drive the continued implementation of GM's global privacy strategy and Privacy Program
  • Respond to inquiries from business clients across the organization regarding privacy and cybersecurity requirements, including enterprise wide privacy compliance initiatives on new privacy regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of a data governance structure to ensure compliance with privacy and data protection laws on a global basis
  • Review and advise on proposed or pending data-related legislation and regulations to assess the impact on GM business interests and to advance those interests
  • Work closely with business and product development teams to advance privacy-by-design and security-by-design efforts
  • Help create and deliver privacy, cybersecurity, and data governance training and awareness materials
  • Provide general legal advice to technical and business teams on the development, delivery and operation of connected vehicle technologies, including services delivered through in-vehicle systems and through mobile apps, with an emphasis on privacy, cybersecurity, and data governance
  • Draft, negotiate, and advise on commercial transactions, with an emphasis on technology and data licensing transactions

Additional Job Description

Qualifications & Experience:
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience focused on global privacy matters
  • Strong transactions experience with an emphasis on technology and data licensing transactions
  • Knowledge of and experience advising product and service companies on relevant U.S. and international privacy, cybersecurity, data protection, and marketing laws, including:
    • California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)
    • European General Data Protection Regulation
    • Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
    • Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB)
    • Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003 (CAN-SPAM)
    • Canada Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)
  • Experience providing advice in a fast-paced and innovative global business environment
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others and collaborate with cross-functional teams, as well as the ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with an ability to express complex legal matters in clear, concise, business-friendly language
  • Ability to efficiently resolve issues and recommend solutions that are legally sound and pragmatic in the context of business goals
  • International experience is a plus
  • Experience handling data breaches and responding to security incidents is a plus
  • Familiarity with the automotive, technology, fintech and/or telecommunications industry is a plus
  • Engineering or programming background is a plus

Education Requirements:
  • Law degree from an accredited college or university
  • Admitted to practice and in good standing in at least one jurisdiction in the United States
  • CIPP certification is a plus
