The purpose of the Consumer Lending Underwriter I is to review and decision all Direct loans to ensure proper timeliness and minimize lending exposure to the Bank.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consumer Lending Underwriter I will be responsible for analyzing consumer credit files, verifying and documenting income, ensuring sufficient collateral, making appropriate loan decisions or recommend approval to senior underwriters, work closely with business line partners, and meet established service level agreements while adhering to all regulatory requirements.

  • Review and decision, within defined guidelines, all Direct credit decision queues to ensure proper turn-around times are achieved.
  • Analyze credit policy exceptions and make appropriate approval/counter offer along proper override reasons while maintaining acceptable level of delinquency.
  • Utilize effective communication and negotiating skills to provide support to the dealers/branches as needed to maintain a high level of customer service.

PROBLEM SOLVING & DECISION MAKING:

  • Ability to make sound loan decisions in a timely fashion and understand that it is prudent to weigh all the facts before making any decision. Qualified applicants will possess strong analytical skills in tax return and income analysis as well as familiarity with business organizational structures. They must be organized, able to work individually and with business partners collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Advance communication and negotiating skills are necessary to work in this fast-paced environment.
  • Must work independently to review loans for eligibility within the bank's lending authority for all Consumer Loan products including Home Equity Lines of Credit, Auto loans, unsecured loans, Heat Loans, Personal Lines of Credit, and Cash Reserve
  • Underwriting of files in a timely fashion to meet established service level agreements
  • Recommend approvals for loans exceeding lending authority to senior underwriters
  • Review, analyze, and document all sources of income including personal and business tax returns
  • Review vendor reports related to title and valuation
  • Effectively communicate with Branches, Processors, and other staff regarding any loan stipulations required
  • Maintain comprehensive application notes throughout the loan life cycle
  • Ensure compliance with all bank policies and procedures
  • Update file status in systems as well as maintain comprehensive notes to file.
  • Knowledge of appraisal reviews in accordance with all regulatory requirements
  • Participate in special projects as required by management as well as post-closing underwriting reviews
  • Familiar with all Consumer Lending regulatory guidelines

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in business administration and/or 3-5 years equivalent work experience in Indirect/Direct loan experience.
  • Experience with underwriting consumer lending products; Home Equity, Unsecured and Heat Loans preferred.

Skills/Knowledge

  • Superior communication, organizational, multitasking and interpersonal skills required
  • Strong computer skills
  • Experienced in a fast-paced high-volume environment
  • Knowledge of consumer lending principles and practices, with particular focus on home equity lines of credit.
  • Experience in Windows is required.
