We are looking for an individual for a Community Engagement Coordinator position within the Department of Psychiatry/Behavioral Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. This role will manage and oversee a community-engaged research project regarding substance use, mental health, HIV prevention and care, and transgender health. Under the guidance of the principal investigator (PI) of the project, this role will lead in the engagement, advocacy, and dissemination of research findings within the community, with particular focus on the transgender community. Specifically, the Community Engagement Coordinator will manage the partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs), design and coordinate community recruitment materials and plans (especially outside of traditional strategies), advocate for affirming research practices/methods within this project, curate community resource and referral guide, collect qualitative and quantitative information/feedback from the community of focus, and develop community-centered dissemination plans for project results. Further, they will help mentor the project team (related to community engagement) including students, interns, trainees, and research staff and provide education to the department faculty and staff on community-engaged research methods. The position requires strong leadership, organization, and interpersonal skills. This position is about a 2-year position (ending around Jan 2026) and part-time (~24 hours) [eligible for benefits].

Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Relevant activities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Lead the design of community engaged recruitment strategies and materials in collaboration with community partners. Recruitment strategies will focus on community-outreach, events, presentations and other engagement with attention to historical marginalization of trans women.

• Coordinate, and execute recruitment outreach procedures in collaboration with community partners. This includes problem solving barriers to community participation that often come from marginalization and drug use (unstable housing, transportation, non-formal work schedules).

• Collect, curate, and maintain community psychosocial and structural community resources and referrals.

• Manage collaboration with community-partners along with developing new relationships with community stakeholders.

• Manage screening and enrollment of community members in research project. This includes being a primary point of contact for the study, responding to phone calls/emails/etc., and informed consent procedures.

• Complete qualitative interviews with community members and report on themes and patterns observed.

• Coordinate engagement of quantitative survey regarding community health equity needs.

• Train new study staff, students, and trainees in project community engagement methods. Will also collaborate with PI in mentoring trainees in community engagement related to this project.

• Performs administrative duties as required including, but not limited to, overseeing day-to-day community engagement operations, maintaining engagement records and tracking databases, leading and/or participating in weekly team/departmental meetings, and managing financial compensation of community organizations/members.

• Co-design and coordinate dissemination of study results back into the community in collaboration with community partners.

• Produce regular reports on community engagement activities.

• With empathy and respect, manage challenging interpersonal situations with community members serving as research participants (i.e., customer service) who have current/history of drug use, challenges of marginalization (unstable housing, low income, food insecurity, sex work, gender/racial/HIV discrimination), and mental health issues.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

• Proficiency with Microsoft-based software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook to process data and enhance communication.

• Strong interpersonal skills and comfort to develop community relationships/partnerships and manage challenging interpersonal situations with research participants who have current/history of drug use, challenges of marginalization (unstable housing, low income, food insecurity, sex work, gender/racial/HIV discrimination), and mental health issues.

• Affirming and nondiscriminatory attitudes and behaviors towards all people including those who use drugs, transgender women, those living with HIV, those engaging in sex work, and those with mental health challenges.

• Passion for advancing grounded and sustainable community engagement around health and heath care, and interest in promoting health equity among diverse communities.

• Strong public speaking skills

• Ability to translate research findings in diverse formats for public consumption.

• Careful attention to detail.

• Good organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask.

• Ability to problem solve effectively and independently. This position requires a high degree of motivation and self-sufficiency, although extensive training will be provided.

• Ability to oversee and train subordinates.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

Minimum Required:

High school diploma, GED or equivalent

Equivalent Experience - please document if educational requirements can be met through equivalent experience:

Lived experience, advocacy, and community organization experience all will be considered in lieu of educational background.

EXPERIENCE

Experience with community engagement and engagement program co-creation around health equity highly desired. Especially related to those who use drugs, transgender women, those with HIV, those engaging in sex work, and those with mental health challenges.

Experience with customer service managerial roles in any field would be especially helpful in this position as it requires ability to manage challenging interpersonal situations and guide subordinates in navigating such situations.

Experience in providing mentorship and education related to community engagement for psychosocial health equity would be helpful.

Familiarity clinical research would be helpful, but not required.

Lived experience, education, research experience, advocacy, and community organization experience will all be considered as experience and beneficial background for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position is about a 2-year position (ending around Jan 2026) at 24 hours a week [eligible for benefits].

Open to discussing flexibility regarding days/hours and hybrid in-person/remote options. However, would need some availability for weekday daytime hours.

Massachusetts General Hospital Behavioral Medicine Program

One Bowdoin Square, Boston, MA

Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

• Collaborate with PI to interview and select student volunteers and trainees to work on project.

• Train new study staff, students, and trainees.

• Help PI with any needed evaluations/recommendations of study staff, students, and trainees.

• Will also collaborate with PI in mentoring trainees related to this project.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

• Managing community participant compensation (~250 participants) and maintaining records/documentation.

• Coordination and tracking of community-partner compensation (~6 partners) and maintaining records/documentation.
