On the most beautiful college campus in the country, SMU Mustangs are energized by unbridled opportunities – from teaching, learning and research to creativity, performance and athletic endeavor.About the Position:As a Communication Officer you must be able to work all shifts: 7am - 3pm, 3pm - 11pm, 11pm - 7am, as assigned.  The SMU Police Department communication center is staffed 24/7 to monitor and operate the radio system, 911 call systems, monitor fire and security alarms, CCTV System, backup alarm monitor for the George W Bush Presidential Center, weather monitor and acts as the University operator during non-duty hours.Essential Functions:

    Receives complaints and questions from the university community via phone, email, or walk up window. Assess the information that is given and then dispatches police, fire, or EMS via the radio systemMaintains a detailed computerized police activity log. Documents all calls for service and radio traffic from officers in CAD system. CO uses the CAD system to verify if an officer has ever had previous dealings with a person or a vehicle. Duties also include submitting prepared reports, and updating reference manuals.Operates multiple computer systems: CCTV system of 1000+ cameras, fire/security alarm monitoring system, E911, and police blotterCollects and records money for payments for bonds, fingerprints, reports and notary service.Accounts for and maintains equipment. 


Qualifications
Education and Experience:A high school diploma or equivalent is required for this position. Must have a minimum of one year work experience in a customer service environment, preferably in a dispatch center and/or security guard.

Knowledge of law enforcement terminology or procedures preferred. Must be a US citizen and must pass a background investigation equivalent to a Police Officer.
Candidate must be able to obtain telecommunications operator license from TCOLE within 1 year of employment.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and communicate effectively in any situation. Must also demonstrate strong decision making, problem solving ability, and to take control of stressful situations in a calm manner. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must also possess strong organizational, planning and time managements skills with the ability to oversee multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. Must also possess a strong focus on attention to detail.

Candidate must possess strong problem solving skills, with the ability to be resourceful, proactive, and seek assistance as needed. Must also possess the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.

Candidate should have the ability to operate MS Word and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook.)Physical and Environmental Demands:
