Position Summary

The Clinical Risk Manager is responsible for the primary risk identification and mitigation processes throughout Medical Faculty Associates and for MFA-PIC insured providers as directed by the Director of Clinical Risk Management. With the information gathered, the Clinical Risk Manager analyzes loss and other data sources, and develops risk mitigation activities, metrics for monitoring these activities, and supports the claim reporting function when risk issues are identified that could lead to a liability claim against an individual insured and/or MFA.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reviews all events and near misses reported through the event reporting system and any other means. Make appropriate referrals for event investigation and follow-up to business unit owners.
  • For any Serious Safety Events and Sentinel Events, leads or contributes to the investigation of event (to include staff interviews, review of records for timeline development, verification of policy/procedure compliance or variance). Collaborate with appropriate staff to organize Root Cause Analysis or other performance improvement activities.
  • Completes medical record reviews, compares current practice against best practice guidelines, and provides recommendations to reduce risk and improve patient care processes.
  • Complete and submit Notice of Claim Advisory Form to Claims Manager using established guidelines.
  • Lead/Organize disclosure teams for adverse outcomes when appropriate for disclosure.
  • Collate, write and disseminate quarterly Risk Analysis and Summary report in support of Risk Management/Patient Safety Committee activities.
  • Coordinates and/or conducts routine Risk Assessment in high-risk areas or process and implements action plans from findings.
  • Support Patient Experience department with Complaint and Grievance responses specific to harm (and potential for liability).
  • Collaborates with Claims Department to investigate potential compensable events, which may include interviews of medical staff, employees, visitors, and patients, and assesses potential liability.
  • Identifies potential loss conditions and practices and evaluates their significance. Reports findings and devises remedial action plans.
  • Develops and implements risk management and patient safety educational programs and materials.
  • Drafts or reviews documents to reduce institutional exposure to liability.
  • Writes and reviews policies and procedures, develops educational safety programs and materials, and contributes to quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing, Medical or other clinical degree required.
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM), or Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS).
  • One designation must be achieved within one year of eligibility of certification

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of nursing, medical, or other clinical experience, preferably hospital-based.

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in risk management, quality improvement, professional liability claims, legal, or the equivalent combination of experience is required.

  • Experience working with electronic medical records, hospital operational policies and procedures.
