The Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neurology, is seeking a Clinical Research Nurse Coordinator to apply clinical and administrative skills in carrying out clinical research protocols. This position will be involved in all aspects of research including patient recruitment and enrollment, patient education and assessment, data collection and monitoring, collection and processing of biological samples, regulatory documentation, reviewing case report forms, assisting in protocol evaluation and coordinating scheduling of follow-up appointments. This position will work with the entire research team on all research protocols. This is a specified term position.

Duties to include:

  • Perform clinical/health care research activities.
  • Schedule patient visits within parameters specified in study protocol.
  • Discuss protocols with potential study participants either in person or over the phone.
  • Meet with patients during study visits.
  • Assure compliance with study protocol.
  • Assist with obtaining and processing of clinical trial specimens.
  • Educate patients and families on scope of study, potential risks and benefits, possible alternatives, and study requirements for patient.
  • May perform or assist with patient assessments and review of medical history.
  • May administer study medication.
  • May educate patients and families about administration and use of study medications.
  • Assist in protocol development and provide input into descriptions of routine research procedures.
  • Assure study visit compliance within window of visit schedule.
  • Assist with resolution of monitoring visit issues.
  • Serve as liaison to local health care practitioners, agencies, and sponsors.
  • Screen for subject eligibility and obtain informed consent for clinical trials/studies.
  • Schedule trial-related procedures and visits.
  • Collect and enter clinical research data in a timely manner.
  • Assist with determining validity of data obtained.
  • Collect and maintain regulatory documents from subjects and assist in preparation of required regulatory forms and documentation according to protocol.
  • Report any reportable events to appropriate party.
  • Assist with compliance of regulatory guidelines and proper maintenance of documents.
  • May provide functional and/or administrative supervision.
  • Assist in budget development and monitoring for study.

Division of Neurology Summary:

The Division of Pediatric Neurology is committed to providing excellent clinical care, educating trainees at all levels, and advancing knowledge through biomedical research. Pediatric neurology faculty members work together with pediatric neurology nurse practitioners and specialized nursing staff to deliver outstanding care in all aspects of pediatric neurology. The division has particular clinical expertise in epilepsy, neurogenetics and neuromuscular disorders. The Division of Pediatric Neurology is dedicated to educating the next generation of clinicians about child neurology. The division participates in the education of medical students, residents in pediatrics, neurology, and psychiatry, and future pediatric neurologists.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or a combination of an Associate's degree in nursing and relevant experience.
  • Minimum of one year of related clinical experience is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrated excellence with written and verbal communication skills.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
    • 1-3 years previous experience or participation in clinical trials.
    • Demonstrated experience in clinical trial management including IRB protocols.
    • Previous experience with Pediatric patient population.
    • Demonstrated previous experience with research subject recruitment.
    • Demonstrated experience in a role requiring independent decision making.
