About the Department:

The Underwood Law Library primarily supports research at SMU's Dedman School of Law but also serves the legal research needs of all of SMU's faculty, staff, and students. The library also serves the North Texas legal community.

About the Position:

SMU is seeking for a Circulation Desk Attendant that will staff the Dedman law library's circulation desk. This position handles day-to-day operations needed for the circulation desk to function. The schedule for the position is 3:30pm - 12:00am, Sunday through Thursday (includes evening and weekend hours). Hours vary during the summer and semester interim periods.

Essential Functions:

  • Staff the law library's circulation desk
  • Shelve books and maintain their order through shelf reading
  • Assist library patrons in their use of the library
  • Photocopy, fax, data entry, mail delivery, and similar clerical tasks
  • Maintain the orderly appearance of library facilities
  • Operate the Windows-based circulation system


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A minimum of two years of college is required. A bachelor's degree is preferred.

A minimum of two years of customer service-related experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate with strong experience using Microsoft Windows-based personal computers is required. Candidate with strong customer service orientation is required. Dependability and punctuality are essential. Canidate with experience working in a library is preferred.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Accurancy and attention to detail is a must.

Physical and Environmental Demands:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and bend, kneel, and push/pull carts.
  • Exposure to dust.
