Position Summary:
The Chief of Staff serves as the primary support to the President, providing information, strategy, coordination, management, and oversight for a variety of activities in support of the CT State President and the college's mission, values and goals. The Chief of Staff works to maximize operational efficiency and ensure timely completion and implementation of various directives, policies, processes, initiatives, and projects. Responsible for driving complex project-based initiatives across the College, organizes and facilitates the strategic planning and management process, formulates senior management presentations, coordinates and integrates the activities of the direct reports to the President, oversees all facets of the daily operations of the Office of the President, acts as President's primary liaison with management, staff, committees and the community and directly handles matters of importance to the President. This position also serves as the strategic advisor to the Connecticut State Community College President and management team with respect to marketing and public relations.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.).

Example of Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Connecticut State Community College (CT State) President, the Chief of Staff is responsible for the effective performance in these essential duties:

  • Overseeing the daily operations of the Office of the President and serving as point of contact for internal and external constituencies related to the President and CT State matters. Counseling, advising, and updating the President on day-to-day operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness and optimizing resources, including the management of the budget for the President's Office.
  • Partnering with the President's Cabinet of executives and campus leaders and collaborating with individuals across campuses to actively drive strategic and operational priorities forward. Building an atmosphere of coordination and clear understanding of the President's expectations and vision, the college's mission, values and goals.
  • Ensuring proper application of CT State policies and procedures in collaboration with President's Cabinet and institution leadership, as appropriate.
  • Representing the President with various constituencies, including the CSCU Board of Regents and committees, CSCU Chancellor's Office, CSCU Labor Relations/Shared Services (Office of General Counsel, Human Resources, Government Relations), college management, college governance leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni, foundations, and various external entities.
  • Responsible for cabinet level oversight of a comprehensive program of marketing and public relations for the college, consistent with college and system strategic planning goals and objectives. Responsible for the cabinet level oversight of marketing, communications - both internal and external. The position participates in high level, confidential discussions including bargaining unit strategies and collective bargaining contract negotiations.
  • Lead and drive the management of Presidential initiatives and projects that support the advancement of the college and value proposition including partnerships with business and industry, universities, and community-based organizations.
  • Facilitating clear communications and information flow and sharing among the President, CT State Cabinet, institution leaders and internal and external stakeholders in support of efficient and effective operations throughout the College, and timely decision making.
  • Working closely with the President's Cabinet, extended Cabinet, and campus leadership to ensure fulfillment of goals and initiatives.
  • Partner with Institutional Research, Finance and Administration, Academic Affairs/Student Affairs/Workforce Development, and Enrollment Management to ensure college and student success metrics are readily available and updated for internal and external reporting.
  • Serving as the President's Office liaison to CSCU system office officials, government agencies, municipalities, K12 districts, universities, and federal/national/professional associations/organizations; ensuring the accurate, proper, and timely flow of information to and from the Office of the President.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution (or equivalent combination of education, training and experience).

Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:

  • A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in various functional areas of higher
    education.
  • Demonstrated record of detail-oriented, collaborative, and decisive leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, plan and manage change within an organization.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
  • Ability to create and maintain strategic direction.
  • Success in building productive internal and external partnerships with community organizations, federal and state agencies and business and industry.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills.

Starting Salary:
Anticipated Salary: $157,974 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits.
