Position Summary

The Technician position will support the Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems (ATC/LS) Branch of the Mission Systems Test and Evaluation Division, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division. This competency provides the engineering and technical personnel, processes, and facilities necessary to support project teams in the development, test, and evaluation of ATC/LS and related aircraft avionics and flight control integrations in current and future USN/USMC aircraft platforms. The scope of support includes automatic landing systems (e.g. Automatic Carrier Landing System (ACLS)), Instrument Landing Systems (e.g. Instrument Carrier Landing System (ICLS) and Civilian Instrument Landing System (C-ILS)), landing systems for unmanned air vehicles, satellite-based landing systems, flight controls, autopilots, radar beacon transponders, data links, sensor technology, and cockpit display systems. The Branch supports the research, development, test, evaluation, and flight certification of aircraft compatibility with current and future shore based and shipboard visual and electronic landing aids for all classes of aviation-capable ships. In addition, the Branch is responsible for the certification of aircraft carrier (CV/CVN), amphibious assault ship (LHA/LHD), and Naval Air Station (NAS) Precision Approach and Landing Systems (PALS). Tasks performed by this electronics technician will contribute to and/or form the basis for decisions as to whether given aircraft systems/landing systems fulfill the purpose for which they are designed (e.g. performance, capability, safety, reliability and maintainability).

Expectation is that individual will be given responsibility for certain technical aspects of assigned tasks, with significant guidance provided from senior technicians and branch leadership. Assignments will involve work on a variety of DT&E projects involving data links, RADAR Beacon Systems, AFCS's, and electronic landing aids including support for government and contractor activities such as NAVAIR, SPAWAR, FAA, and fleet squadrons and ships.

The individual may be required to travel up to 40% (~8-12 nights a month) of the time in the performance of assigned duties, which includes shipboard and shore based assignments. There is recurring travel to/from shore based installations and ships. Travel is occasionally conducted in Navy transport aircraft to/from ships and test sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but not limited to:

  • Provide technical support for data link, Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), PALS modes, radar beacons, and other electronic landing aid systems to project engineers in the Branch
  • Provide checkout, repair, and refurbishment capability for the ACLS Radar Test Facility (RTF)

  • Perform laboratory tests of data link systems, beacon systems, ICLS/C-ILS components, special bench tests, and other electronic ATC/LS devices using standard and special laboratory equipment
  • Complete test procedures and data collection to support test analysis, with guidance from senior technicians and supervisor
  • Establish an understanding of the systems under test and special test equipment for these systems
  • Review technical manuals, specifications, and equipment handbooks related to ATC/LS to gain additional knowledge of these systems and their operation
  • Assist military technicians in the maintenance of ATC/LS, such as AFCS, ICLS/C-ILS, ACLS, and RADAR Beacon Systems when difficult maintenance problems arise
  • Work with senior technicians to formulate recommendations concerning corrections needed to achieve customer satisfaction
  • Provide technical assistance and support to the Branch's project engineers during DT&E flight test programs
    • These programs include development and optimization of airborne ATC/LS (ACLS, AFCS, ICLS/C-ILS, Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS)), development of ground electronic landing aid systems, and certification of shore based and shipboard PALS systems
    • This technical assistance includes supporting functional check out flights of both Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division and fleet test aircraft to determine proper operation of appropriate airborne systems, supporting shipboard pierside and at-sea flight tests, and monitoring and analyzing ground and airborne systems instrumentation data
  • Perform technical data collection for correlation with the test pilot qualitative assessments.
Requirements

Minimum Requirements

Knowledge and Skills
  • Candidate must possess a basic knowledge of digital logic circuitry, analog circuit techniques, RF measurement & analysis, use of integrated circuits and standard electrical components, an understanding of radio and radar principles of operations, aircraft structure, and mechanical and electrical installation design for Navy aircraft
  • Candidate must possess a basic knowledge and skill to perform laboratory tests of data link equipment, RADAR Beacon Systems, electronic landing aids, and peculiar bench test equipment using standard and special laboratory electronic test equipment
  • Candidate must have a basic knowledge of the equipment being tested and operating procedures for the special laboratory test equipment
  • Candidate must possess some knowledge of schematics, wiring diagrams, installation drawings, specifications, and work orders to work from them
  • Candidate must possess a basic knowledge and skill to perform check out, fault isolation, maintenance, and repair of airborne data link systems, RADAR Beacon Systems, ICLS/C-ILS, and AFCS
  • Candidate must possess a basic knowledge and skill to understand and work with technical manuals, military specifications, and equipment handbooks related to ATC/LS and their support equipment, to senior technicians and supervisor
  • Candidate must be able to communicate with others clearly, both orally and in writing

  • The minimum years of related experience required: 3 years minimum
Education
  • High School Diploma

Preferred Requirements
  • Prior military experience on the type of aircraft specific to the contract.
  • F/A-18 Aviation Electronics Technician Background
  • Clearance: Active Secret security clearance
Physical Requirements

  • Candidate must be able to pass a USN 3620-1 Medical Screening to board CVN class ships.

  • Employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision, Distance vision, Peripheral vision, Depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand for prolonged periods and stand on uneven surfaces including but not limited to ladder rungs; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to heights and must be able to perform physical activity while utilizing lift equipment and wear proper safety attire.
  • The employee must be able to perform job functions in confined spaces. The employee is required to walk; sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Work Conditions

  • This job operates in indoor and outdoor settings.
  • The indoor settings include aircraft hangar, office, and warehouse environments.
  • The outdoor settings include parking lots and airplane ramps and taxiways. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally loud.
  • Occasionally subject to varying inside and/or outside temperatures, which may include extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees) or extreme cold (temperatures below 32 degrees).
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.
