The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Neurosurgery is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist that will independently plan and manage human neurosurgery patient research following IRB protocols, procedures and institutional guidelines, while overseeing the development of laboratory infrastructure to support acquisition, storage and analysis of electrophysiological data, including novel recording approaches and brain stimulation (e.g., electrical and ultrasound). This individual will also help to oversee and work with members of the lab and external collaborators. They will also communicate results effectively in peer-reviewed journals, seminars and professional conferences, and support and be involved in grant applications.

Job Duties to include:

  • Perform experiments and neuropsychological, EEG/fMRI evaluation with the human participants and neurosurgery patients
  • Collect data and evaluate relevance of data.
  • Work independently on basic research tasks and help to coordinate the laboratory research with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures.
  • Coordinate with clinical teams to test the patients before, during and after their procedures, which will involve flexibility when patient testing is possible.
  • Analyze data for relevance and data integrity.
  • Perform basic data analysis techniques.
  • Evaluate and implement relevant analytics and statistics for data analysis.
  • Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work.
  • Prepare manuscripts for contributing author for publication.
  • Present results in departmental seminars and at professional meetings.
  • Contribute to new and continuing research grant proposals to obtain funding for research activities.
  • Serve as co-PI on grants and proposals and work towards independent work and applications for funding.
  • Contribute to progress reports required by funding agencies.
  • Supervise adherence to safety and compliance guidelines when necessary.
  • Provide service to the scientific community, University and General Public.
  • Review submitted manuscripts and research proposals.
  • Support and submit IRB ethical application/amendments as needed.
  • Ensure high standards of ethics in human and human patient research.
  • Consult and collaborate with the research community.
  • Participate in public outreach activities as required by funding sources.
  • Participate in national and international meetings within the discipline.
  • Mentor graduate students and other laboratory staff.
  • Always work in a collegial and professional manner with staff and patients.
  • May provide some functional and/or administrative supervision for staff.
  • Provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching and counseling to assure outcomes are achieved.

Education:
  • PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology or related Life Sciences field is required

Required Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years postdoctoral experience in neuroscience is required.
  • Must demonstrate record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Experience working with human research participants in a clinical environment is required.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in signal analysis and statistics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.
  • Experience with laboratory human experimentation and ethics is required.
  • Experience setting up, maintaining and trouble-shooting experimental preparations involved in electrophysiological recording under time-pressure.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in the collection and analysis of human intracranial recordings including ECoG, fMRI/EEG and mass single unit activity.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing eye-tracking or behavioral data in combination with electrophysiological recordings.
  • Willingness to implement new brain stimulation technology (e.g., ultrasound)
  • Some familiarity with the programming and operation of TDT and NeuraLynx digital signal processing system.
  • Experience using cluster computing.
  • Knowledge of best practices for the management of large data sets.
  • Knowledge of the theory and application of signal processing and statistical models, time-series and Granger Causal models.
