Asst. Director - Professional Development

The focus of this position is on professional development for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and on supporting graduate students' academic success. Specifically, this position will actively engage in promoting an inclusive graduate education and professional environment where everyone has opportunities to maximize their potential.


The Assistant Director (AD) will develop, implement, market, evaluate, and coordinate programming with campus and industry partners. Professional development programming may include but is not limited to the following: career exploration, interviewing, networking well-being, cultural competence, Individual Development Plans, communicating science to various audiences (e.g., Science Slam), leadership, teamwork, and mentorship. Additionally, the AD will consult with students (e.g., one-on-one), and support the development of professional and career documents (e.g., IDP, resume, cover letter).


The AD will collaborate with administrators, graduate committee chairs, graduate faculty, graduate students, and staff to develop interventions to improve student success. This programming may include but is not limited to the following: graduate student orientation, mentorship, graduate student support resources, and conflict management. In support of graduate student success, the AD will work with graduate students and/or graduate faculty directly. This work may include but is not limited to: aligning expectations, developing plans and goals for academic progress, finding and directing people to campus and community resources, and mediating conflicts.


Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree plus a minimum one (1) year of experience in professional development work in a post-secondary setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and facilitate workshops.
  • Demonstrated skills with word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Proven ability to interact effectively with diverse populations, including undergraduate and graduate students, staff, postdocs faculty and senior administration.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
