Job Summary

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Knoxville is accepting applications for the position of Practical Nursing Instructor to be located at TCAT Knoxville and possible offsite locations. The typical work schedule will be 7.5 hours per day and 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute lunch break.

POSITION SUMMARY: To provide quality instruction for student learning and maintain a positive classroom learning environment. The major emphasis will be placed on teaching and evaluating students in the classroom and laboratories.

PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM: The Practical Nursing Program is approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing. Graduates will obtain a diploma in Practical Nursing and may then be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Exam for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) used to obtain nursing licensure in Tennessee. Practical Nursing is entry-level nursing. Graduates are prepared with the background and skills to give knowledgeable, basic nursing care to patients with varying physical needs. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) work under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors. Positions are available in hospitals, long-term care facilities, physician's offices, home health agencies, and other healthcare settings.

Job Duties

  • Instruction: Facilitate the classroom instructional process: evaluate and monitor student progress; assign grades; provide academic assistance to students; maintain attendance and grade records; counsel and advise students on career goals; work to retain students; maintain required classroom and office hours. - (Essential)
  • Course and Curriculum Development: Select texts, equipment, supplies, and other learning resources; participate in the purchase of needed program supplies and equipment; develop instructional materials; create and revise courses and/or curricula as needed; maintain updated course syllabi. - (Essential)
  • Professional Growth: Remain current within instructional field and technologies; acquire, maintain, and apply knowledge of current instructional methodologies and materials; attend scheduled college and division professional development and in-service activities; support related professional organizations; participate in the annual faculty evaluation process. - (Essential)
  • Service to Students: Comply with FERPA laws; participate in advising, recruitment, admissions, and orientation of potential students; assist students with job placement upon graduation; support student activities, including SkillsUSA and NTHS. - (Essential)
  • Service to the College and Community: Assist in the recruitment and selection of college personnel as assigned; participate in accreditation, assessment, and performance funding processes; support and participate in the College's decision-making processes; provide input and assistance with budgets; attend convocation and commencement exercises and participate in mandatory college programs; develop and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with colleagues; maintain an active program advisory committee; complete the annual Council on Occupational Education (COE) report for the program job placement of students as well as other accreditation requirements. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

ASN and current licensure are in good standing as a registered nurse in the State of Tennessee. Three (3) years of clinical practice as a Registered Nurse within the past five (5) years.

Preferred Qualifications

BSN; Prior post-secondary nursing curriculum teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of college policies, procedures, and practices; knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Title VII, Title IX, ADA, and other applicable laws pertaining to employment and education; ability to plan, organize and implement assigned responsibilities and to work well under pressure to meet deadlines; excellent organizational, analytical and planning skills; ability to participate as a team member, ability to understand and interpret rules and regulations, and ability to adjust to change; ability to handle confidential material judiciously; understanding of education programs and tools.

* Ability to effectively apply a multi-method approach to enhance student understanding of materials, including demonstrations, lectures, and hands-on activities.
* Ability to understand which teaching methods best serve the student's needs, interests, and learning ability.
* Ability to develop accurate and objective standards to measure learning or administer testing or other evaluations to determine effectiveness and ensure a high level of comprehension has been achieved.
* Ability to teach basic and advanced nursing courses, including fundamentals, basic IV, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, medical and surgical nursing, pediatrics, obstetrics, and clinical practice.
* Build and maintain relationships with area employers to facilitate the referral and employment of career and technical students.
* Perform assigned responsibilities, duties, and tasks according to established practices, procedures, techniques, and standards in a safe manner and with minimal supervision.
* Contributes to a safe educational and working environment by participating in all drills and training and being prepared to take action should a health or safety emergency occur.

EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE: Utilize current College and department information technology, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook, Ellucian Banner, etc.; office machines such as telephones, fax machines, and copiers.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The conditions herein represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
Environment: Work is performed in a classroom and shop setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. The majority of work performed (30 hours per week) will be instructing and training students, with the remaining 7.5 hours utilized for grading, recording attendance, and individual student meetings.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a classroom and clinical health care setting.

SALARY: Commensurate with education and experience according to Tennessee Board of Regent guidelines.
