Job Info

We are looking for a talented researcher to develop methods at the interface between machine learning and statistical genetics to aid the discovery of novel drug targets and connect genetic variation to human diseases and health. The role will involve a mix of leadership and hands on research and development, working across a variety of applications involving large scale genetic variation, imaging and electronic health record datasets at the Regeneron Genetics Center (RGC).

In this role, a typical day might include the following:

  • Develop and apply cutting edge methods at the interface between MLand statistical genetics and deploy them at scale to answer biological and disease genetics questions that cover all the areas of interest of the RGC.
  • Take a leading role on special projects involving genome scale analyses of human genetic data and their application to elucidate complex trait biology.
  • Contribute to teams of investigators executing groundbreaking genomic analyses, both within an institution and across institutions.
  • Implement solutions using modern cluster and cloud computing environments is required. The candidate will routinely use advanced tools for genomic analyses, for statistical analyses, ML and computation to execute analyses at scale and to facilitate effective annotation, sharing and collaboration.
  • Critically review and provide feedback on statistical methods and analyses plans, results and summaries to ensure they are accurate and reliable. Identify potential problems and propose remedies or refinements.

This job might be for you if you:
  • Have a strong work ethic and are proactive in providing solutions to foster scientific collaborations and drive projects forward within Regeneron.
  • Have ability to work in a highly interactive environment with a diverse team of colleagues.
  • Have outstanding communication skills to summarize and present new statistical methods and concepts and the results of human genetic studies to a variety of technical audiences, ranging from experts in statistical genetics and computation to experts in biology, drug design and medicine.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to more junior colleagues to help them develop their full potential and build new skills and abilities. The outstanding candidate will be able help teams of skilled individuals to consistently achieve high levels of motivation, enthusiasm and performance.
  • Are a motivated teammate with a desire to pursue genetic discovery in a multi-disciplinary environment.

To be considered for this role, you must have a PhD in Statistical Genetics, Machine Learning, Statistics, or Computer Science as well as at least 7 years of postdoc experience. A strong track record in development of machine learning and/or statistical genetics methods in a creative and insightful manner, evidenced by a strong publication record. Candidates with a machine learning background will demonstrate experience across a range of methods such as deep learning, transfer learning, auto encoders, kernel methods, dimension reduction, latent space models, MCMC, graphical models. Candidates with a statistical genetics background will demonstrate experience across a range of genetic association study methods such as design, quality control, association analysis, phasing, imputation, polygenic risk scores, fine mapping, colocalization, mendelian randomization, heritability, population structure, functional interpretation, data visualization. Experience of applied analyses of human genetic data or imaging data at scale is desirable. Proven experience at the interface between ML and statistical genetics. Experience with multiple tools for machine learning and/or statistical genetics applied to large scale analyses across a range modern programming languages (Python, C/C++, Javascript, R). Expertise in developing analysis packages and tools is highly desired, as demonstrated by leadership or contributor roles to statistical packages available on GitHub or elsewhere.
