The Role

Reporting to the Director, CAPEX Procurement, the Associate Director, CAPEX Procurement will be responsible for category management, sourcing, supplier management, and stakeholder engagement for all Moderna external spend in the areas of Architectural, Engineering, Construction Management, Equipment Commissioning Qualification, and Validation.

This position is based in Norwood, MA.

Here's What You'll Do

The Associate Director of CAPEX Procurement will assume accountability for managing, sourcing, and executing CAPEX procurement sourcing categories. The role will be responsible for delivering the optimum balance of value delivery (cost, performance, quality, risk) from Moderna's supply base in the CAPEX categories. This includes implementing and managing the following key activities:

  • Lead and execute the CAPEX Project Procurement Management for assigned CAPEX projects (strategic sourcing, tendering, negotiations, and contracting) within large and medium green or brownfield CAPEX projects (project sizes/spend of $1M up to $200M) with the aim of optimizing value-for-money, lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), on time/schedule, quality, and in-cost project purchases to support the goal for Moderna's growth investments.
  • Ensure appropriate support to local project management in the implementation and execution of CAPEX procurement strategies and processes, applying a professional strategic sourcing approach, and shall be instrumental in the alignment of projects and group-wide knowledge sharing, including implementing unified processes and policies with the capital projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Single point of contact for Global Procurement and business partner interaction at the site
    • Drive site productivity and improvement
    • Manage key relationships with Site VP and CAPEX Functional Leads
    • Build and cultivate strategic stakeholder relationships to find the optimum balance between meeting company needs and delivering total value
    • Frame and drive cross-functional sourcing agenda
  • Strategic Contribution:
    • Develop, support and manage strategies for respective categories
    • Be a trusted advisor to VPs/Senior Leadership Team at the site
    • Bring industry/business function specific knowledge and experience
    • Initiate / build industry peer relationships within the region
  • Strategic Sourcing: Implement strategic sourcing initiatives utilizing a standard framework and departmental tools. This includes:
    • Partnering with stakeholders to build robust scopes of work.
    • Developing sourcing strategies for individual initiatives.
    • Implementing RFx activities utilizing advanced tools and techniques.
    • Preparing and implementing advanced negotiation strategies.
    • Partnering with stakeholders and legal to negotiate and finalize agreements.
    • Lead and execute Global CAPEX Category sourcing strategies
    • Ongoing contract management
  • Supplier Management:
    • Maintain and develop preferred supplier lists
    • Support category managers to identify and articulate long-term strategic value that can be obtained through supplier collaboration
    • Deliver supplier improvement programs and drive continual value from key supplier relationships
  • Change Management:
    • Independent self-starter and able to motivate others to accomplish ambiguous tasks
    • Ability to lead teams across geographic and functional reporting lines
    • Demonstrated track record of identifying root causes to issues and proactively problem solving

  • Risk Management: Evaluating and monitoring the risk profile of the supply base, identify mitigation targets, and implement risk improvement initiatives.
  • Savings Delivery: Develop a portfolio of sourcing initiatives and deliver cost reductions against challenging current and multi-year saving targets.
  • Develop supplier relationships that leverage supplier capabilities, improve supply continuity and reduce the total cost of ownership
  • The position drives category expertise through an understanding of global/regional/local supply markets/trends, cost drivers, and the impact on Moderna's business model/capital projects

Here's What You'll Need (Minimum Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree required (BA/BS in a technical discipline desired)
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a large or medium-sized professional procurement organization with at least 2 years specifically in the biopharmaceutical industry
  • 2+ years of category management experience in the biopharmaceutical manufacturing categories including direct materials, contract manufacturing, capital services and equipment, manufacturing and facilities support services and quality services
  • 2+ years of experience successfully leading high performing teams
  • Able to travel (~25% of time)
  • A proven track record of savings delivery and ability to manage complexity and change
  • Proficient-level skills in the following key competencies/skills: communications, project management, relationship management, influencing, negotiation, financial acumen, analytical, presentation, aptitude for technology, results-focus, professionalism, and success in a matrixed environment
  • Ability to lead through influence, recommend sourcing strategies, and deliver business results

  • Master's degree (MBA, MS) preferred
