  • The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

    Position Summary

    Columbia Business School is seeking a leader with deep experience in higher education and industry for its Career Management Center. Reporting to the Senior Vice Dean of Curriculum & Programs, the Associate Dean of the Career Management Center at CBS is responsible for developing (with the School's senior leadership team) the vision for career support across all degree programs (MBA, EMBA, and MS/PhD) as well as for developing and managing the area's functions, including employer/industry relations, student/alumni counseling, systems/analytics, and the strategic management of the team and budget. The Associate Dean engages regularly with external companies and organizations to facilitate recruitment and hiring of Columbia Business School students, and partners with the school's faculty and staff in admissions and student affairs to ensure alignment of our student populations, programming, and academic curriculum with the talent needs of our external recruiting partners. The Associate Dean also represents the School through interactions and meetings with the leaders of other career centers within Columbia University, at peer business schools, and in the industry at large.

    Responsibilities

    • Vision - Partners with the Senior Vice Dean for Curriculum and Programs to develop strategic initiatives that provide a clear strategy and vision for career management. Develops and contributes material and entries for the School's publications. This includes promoting CBS talent and the work of the department, as well as reporting relevant career data, especially for the myriad of MBA rankings.
    • Strategic leadership - Serves on committees or working groups as appropriate. Interact regularly with a range of diverse stakeholders, on a variety of issues that could include faculty, staff, students, alumni, industry executives, donors, etc. Attend University and Business School committee meetings and represent the School on behalf of senior leadership.

    • Career Education & Student/Alumni Advisement/Coaching - Responsible for a comprehensive career education program including tools for self-assessment and resources for the job search and career development. Works closely with the Directors to oversee advising and coaching available to over 2500 students annually, and lifetime career support to our 49,000 alumni in relation to career planning and job opportunities. Responsible for developing and managing the implementation of new programs. Works in conjunction with other administrators, students, faculty, and alumni.

    • Employer Relations - Identifies and develops relationships with potential new employers and to nurture the on-going relationships with current and past employers of Columbia Business School, as well as oversee the programs and career planning activities directed towards students at the School. Develops and maintains extensive relationships with domestic and international companies, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies which have the potential to provide career opportunities for Columbia Business School students.

    • Systems/Analytics - Provide guidelines to systems administrators with the goal of ensuring the quality, accuracy, and integrity of Careers data for analytics and reporting. Provide direction to staff who perform data analytics and produce reports that can best inform CMC decisions to help meet the School's goals.

    • Operational Management (Budgeting & HR) - Structures support for the CMC's functional areas, has primary oversight for the strategic management of the team as well as the departmental budget and operations. Functional areas include Career Education & Advising (for full time MBAs), Career Leadership & Development (curriculum and program design and delivery systems across all CMC constituents), Employer Relations (recruiter relationship management and business development), Experienced Professionals Career Management (supporting EMBAs and Alumni) and International & MS Career Management. In addition to full time staff, the CMC leverages a cadre of CMC Coaches (40 alumni and peer school practitioners), peer CMC Fellows (60+ second year students) as well as external executive coaches for alumni (21). Partners closely with Human Resources on personnel matters and work to collaboratively solve any issues that develop. Works closely with the Financial Planning office to ensure the department runs on budget and all reporting is accurate, monitored, and timely.

    • Community Involvement - Cultivates School/University-wide relationships with faculty, staff, students and alumni to enhance collaboration and effectiveness. Engages with faculty and department administrators to learn about and communicate broadly innovations in each respective academic area, Center, and/or Program.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree required. Minimum 10+ years related experience required, including substantial leadership/management experience. Advanced degree preferred.

    Must have strong strategic ability and creativity. Must have a collaborative leadership style, including supervisory experience. Must understand the marketplace for business students and graduates of MBA, EMBA, MS and PhD programs, as well as student needs, motivations, and prospects as they approach their near-term job search and consider their longer-term career trajectory. Must possess marketing skills, and a thorough knowledge of private and public sector environments. Should evidence empathy and diplomacy in dealing with diverse constituent groups, with sometimes competing interests given the complexity of stakeholders. Ability to work and manage effectively in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines required. Must be able to travel.

    Preferred Qualifications

    MBA experience is a plus.
