Associate Core Director The Department of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville www.chem.utk.edu invites applications for a regular, exempt, full-time Associate Director (staff, market range 12). This position will act as an associate director of and oversee the operation of the Biological and Small Molecule Mass Spectrometry Core (BSMMSC) and to maintain Chemistry Department MS assets. This involves overseeing maintenance and repair of the mass spectrometers, interfacing with internal andexternal facility users, training of select individuals in their use, scheduling analyses, preparing scientific reports and documents, maintaining records of use and billing for use and services. This position also provides supervision to position 50010732, in conjunction with the faculty director, of BSMMSC staff and student workers.  The associate director will report directly to the faculty director. Qualifications
Duties and Responsibilities:

    Scientific Supervision of the FacilityThis position will work with the faculty director to ensure that the analyses being performed in the BSMMSC are state­ of-the-art and meet the needs of the scientific user community. This task includes the development of new methods as well as the implementation of methods from the scientific literature. Many of the novel methods that have been created with assistance from this position have led to publishable work on their own accord.
o      This person will work with potential users to select proper analyses to meet their scientific goals.This position will help end users analyze processed data to ensure that the interpretation of results are scientifically valid.This task will include major assistance with proposal preparation and major assistance in manuscript preparation. Metabolomics and lipidomics analyses are complex and require a highly specialized skill set encompassing a full understanding of analytical chemistry and statistics as well as organismal physiology. Each sample generates    l Ok data points, and the average user has 50 samples. This position works with users to perform all of the informatics functions necessary to prepare the data for manuscript preparations and also assists with the biological interpretation of the data.This position is the primary customer support for the BSMMSC.Supervises and assigns tasks for Research Coordinator I position 50010732 and prepares of performance review for this position.
    Facility AdministrationThis person will help advertise the BSMMSC and generate new users in conjunction with the faculty director. Performs other duties as assigned.
o     This position will schedule analyses, provide quotes, prepare letters of support for proposals, maintain records of use,provide operational reports (to Chemistry department, CAS, ORE, and Central Finance Office), work with faculty director to update billing rates and ensure sustainable operation, and initiate billing. The facility processes > 18,000 samples a year, and this position is in charge of handling all of the administrative tasks associated with this high samples volume.o      This position is responsible for preparing all requests for internal funding support for the BSMMSC. Typical requests are$50k/year, and these awards are critical for upgrades to the core's scientific capabilities.
    Instrument Maintenance and RepairThis position oversees eight mass spectrometers, and related liquid and gas chromatographic systems and ionization sources (total assets of about $5.0 million).This position is responsible for scheduling and overseeing instrument maintenance and minor repair.This position directs the Research Coordinator I position 50010732 in their assigned maintenance duties.This position works with the faculty director on the purchase of new instrumentation and handles all installations for new equipment and facilities upgrades.
o      This position handles all repairs due to damages resulting from inadequate facilities and catastrophic damage.
    Student Supervision and TrainingThis person will train individuals (primarily students) to operate instruments and to process data. o This position oversees the assignments of two 0.25 GRAs that aid in the operation of the facility.
Instrument OperationThis position is responsible for running user supplied samples, from any department on campus, on Mass Spectrometers in the facility when the capacity of other staff is exhausted.o     This position will also run samples from outside of the university as needed.All qualified applicants will receive equal consideration for employment and admission without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, physical or mental disability, genetic information, veteran status, and parental status.     Oral and written communication skillsknowledge of vacuumelectronics and basic mechanics needed for instrument maintenance and troubleshootingfamiliarity with office computer operation and software, including statistical data analysis
