Position Overview

The Associate Operations Leader (Team Leader) is responsible for supporting and directing the Can Business Unit's efforts in facilitating a safe, environmentally sustainable and productive working environment, sepcifically at the Warren, Ohio plant. This posiiton works rotating shifts and provides leadership for a slitting and coating manufacturing organization. The incumbent seves as the shift supervisor, with 12-20 hourly employees as direct reports.
Responsibilities & Qualifications

Safety - responsible for maintaining and supporting a safe working environment for everyone in the plant. Constantly monitor conditions and crew practices throughout the course of the shift to identify and quickly resolve unsafe conditions or at-risk behaviors. Participate in and support accident investigations and Behavior-Based Safety observations. Administer first aid to employees as needed.

Operational/Administrative - Priority-setting and crew-directing activities to facility's daily progress toward monthly production targets. Scheduling of crews, including overtime (considering equalization), vacations and PTOs, as well as monitoring and addressing absenteeism. Resolve machine center/line problems which result in downtime and/or product quality deficiencies, including coordinating the use of outside resources as needed. Provide input as it relates to product/process problems which may result in the shutdown of a machine center and/or the scrapping of in-process metal. Management of operational supplies. Provide input and interact frequently with maintenance personnel as it relates to machine center reliability, repairs, and coordination of weekly and scheduled PMs. Obtain and communicate improvement ideas, whether from crew members, management or self-directed. Assure accuracy of all production data generated during the crew's shift. Possess a working knowledge of the current labor contract and successfully abide by it.

Customer Returns - Manage and emphasize to crew the importance of adherence to control plans at each specific machine center. Identify and communicate control plan issues in need of review. Educate crew members as to the benefits or process control to identify potential problems proactively. Commend crew members for calling into question product that doesn't meet Novelis' quality standards.

Utilization - Provide input to PM activities, communicate early signals of imminent failure, all leading toward a more preventative approach to maintenance. Solicit the input of others (crew members, maintenance personnel, engineers) regarding continuous improvement ideas for machine center utilization. Identify safer and more efficient ways to perform routine work.

Recovery - Aggressively pursue the reduction of whole coil losses. Solicit ideas from all available resources and communicate them. Emphasize control plan adherence and audit actual behavior to ensure same. Question the validity of processing procedures which appear to carry a recovery penalty. React proactively to potential process/product upsets.

Delivery Performance - Interact with suppliers and customers as needed to better understand their needs and problems. Communicate issues impacting production quickly and to the appropriate personnel. Manage the elements within the position's influence - quality equipment, scheduling, and operations materials - to minimize disruption of planned production time.

SKILLS REQUIRED

Excellent interpersonal relations. Good leadership abilities. Ability to prepare and make group presentations. Ability to work with operator and helpers to reach consensus decisions. Good understanding of manufacturing systems and computer (MS Office, Windows) systems. Basic understanding of human resources management. Must be self-motivated and possess excellent reading, writing, listening and verbal skills.

Must be able to multi-task, supervise others, and follow direction of management. Must be willing and able to discipline employees when necessary, while maintaining a high level of professionalism and fairness. Ability to represent Novelis with external parties. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, with all levels in the organization. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary. Ability to respond to trouble calls 24-hours a day, if necessary.

Location Profile

Novelis' Warren facility is located in northeast Ohio- approximately an hour drive from Cleveland and an hour and a half from Pittsburgh. The facility built in 1965 applies coating to rolled aluminum beverage can sheet. The sheet is used to make aluminum beverage can lids for global soft drink beer and sparkling water brands. Warren showcases several high-end cultural venues including the Warren Community Amphitheater and Packard Music Hall.
