Job Info

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln seeks applications and nominations for an accomplished, strategic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial leader to serve in the critically important, inaugural role of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Digital and Online Learning. The university is searching for a champion of digital and online learning who will work with faculty, staff, and academic leaders to develop and lead strategic initiatives at UNL to increase enrollment; expand, optimize, and enhance program offerings that are fully delivered online; further the university's commitment to access, diversity, equity and inclusion through distance education; identify new markets for credit and non-credit opportunities; establish strong public/private partnerships; and promote the potential of digital and online learning across campus. Such an effort will require an understanding of strategic priorities as outlined in the N2025 Strategic Plan and an appreciation of the university's collaborative and decentralized culture. Successful candidates will be expected to pursue goals aggressively through authentic partnerships.

As an anticipatory leader, futurist, strategist, and integrator, the Assistant Vice Chancellor will be a key member of the Executive Vice Chancellor's leadership team, providing expertise, leadership, and coordination on activities and initiatives that advance and support digital and online learning. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will work closely with the EVC, the leadership team, and the colleges to establish campus-wide strategic priorities, a vision for online programming, and chart a course for success.

Specifically, the Assistant Vice Chancellor will be expected to:

  • Lead the development, integration, and implementation of a comprehensive, transformative, and inclusive strategy for online and digital education, reflective of the goals and aims in the N2025 Strategic Plan.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders on developing recommendations for expanding existing online offerings, developing new programs, identifying new markets, and leveraging opportunities. Key stakeholders include but are not limited to all nine academic colleges, UNL Extension, University Libraries, Academic Services and Enrollment Management, Undergraduate Education and Student Success, and the Office of Graduate Studies.
  • Lead an analysis of existing strengths and resources as compared with market demand and feasibility for UNL's digital education footprint and deploy such analysis on an ongoing basis to assess the strategic plan, goals, and investments.
  • Develop recommendations for effective marketing and recruitment strategies in coordination with academic units, Academic Services and Enrollment Management, and the Office of Graduate Studies.
  • Operationalize business processes that support effective enrollment services and advising, and that foster equity and inclusion efforts for the retention and success of undergraduate, graduate, professional, and non-degree-seeking students.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with industry, business, and community partners to understand and align their workforce and skillset needs with degree- and non-degree-seeking individuals.
  • Champion and inspire a commitment to innovation in digital and online education that is student-centered, such as leading efforts in open educational resources and inclusive access programs.
  • Work to fully realize and enact the university's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Partner with the Center for Transformative Teaching to promote the most current pedagogies in developing effective approaches for online learning at all ages, champion quality standards across all online offerings, and support student success in online environments.
  • Coordinate with Academic Technologies/Information Technology Services to guide UNL forward with strategies that meet the goals of flexible, accessible digital learning needs for the future, the workforce, and all ages and levels of readiness.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, the requirements of the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement, and accessibility requirements identified by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for online learning to the Big Ten Academic Alliance and the NU system's Office of Digital Education, serving as the campus representative on the NU Council for Online Learning Excellence.

This is an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking professional who is innovative, entrepreneurial, competitive, and passionate about higher education, especially the many possibilities that digital and online learning offers. The successful applicant will have extensive knowledge in higher education trends, market research, the current status of digital teaching and learning, online learning pedagogy, inclusive education, and new market development.

Specifically, the inaugural Assistant Vice Chancellor will possess the following:

  • Expertise in online education - deep familiarity of the competitive landscape of online education, and command of the different types of online offerings, including full programs delivered online, hybrid programs, certificates, and badges.
  • Demonstrated evidence of the ability to create a strategy, design tactics, mobilize resources, and analyze effectiveness.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills - demonstrated record of collaboration and working with individuals from varied disciplines and diverse backgrounds.
  • Administrative acumen to work across and within large, complex organizations.
  • A master's degree and a minimum of seven years of related experience are required.
  • An earned terminal degree is preferred.

The position is a 12-month position. Additional information about UNL can be found at https://go.unl.edu/avcdol.
