Advertised Job Summary:

The School of the Earth, Ocean and Environment (SEOE) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Organic Geochemistry or Biogeochemistry beginning August 16, 2024. We seek an outstanding individual who uses innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to examine the ways in which geochemical and biogeochemical processes mediate chemical exchange between the hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere. Areas of interest may include (but are not limited to) marine biogeochemistry, blue carbon, carbon sequestration, characterization of the sources, transformations and fate of organic matter and contaminants in the environment, soil chemistry, the influences of climate and land use change on elemental cycling. The successful candidate will complement, strengthen, and diversify the School's research, and will direct an active, externally-funded research program. Teaching responsibilities will include an undergraduate non-majors course, an upper-level undergraduate course for SEOE majors and a graduate-level course related to the candidate's specialty.

The SEOE is a multidisciplinary unit within the College of Arts and Sciences, with academic programs in Environment and Sustainability (Environmental Science and Environmental Studies), Geology and Geophysics, and Marine Science. SEOE enrolls approximately 600 undergraduate students in four undergraduate programs, 60 graduate students in 5 graduate programs, and 35 faculty representing research areas ranging from physical to social sciences, including marine, environmental and geological sciences. The SEOE houses excellent analytical facilities, including Stable Isotope Laboratories, Radioisotope & Marine Sediments Laboratory, The Center for Elemental Mass Spectrometry, and direct access to the Baruch Marine Field Laboratory at North Inlet Estuary (baruch.sc.edu) and is committed to enhancing the research infrastructure available to faculty, staff, and students.
