The Division of Student Life Human Resources Team is growing and intends to hire for multiple positions at either the Assistant Director (HR Manager) or HR Generalist classification based on the qualifications of the successful candidate.

Assistant HR Director:

As a member of the Division of Student Life HR Team, the Assistant Director will function as a strategic business partner providing leadership, consultation, and guidance on all human resources (HR) areas. This position will be responsible for executing a full range of HR responsibilities from a collaborative, customer-service-oriented perspective. The Assistant Director will also be expected to assist with ensuring the Division of Student Life is making forward progress toward becoming a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization by demonstrating transformational leadership in these areas. This position will also be responsible for providing supervision and leadership to direct reports.

HR Generalist:

As a member of the Division of Student Life HR Team, the HR Generalist will be responsible for executing a wide range of Human Resources (HR) responsibilities from a collaborative, customer-service-oriented perspective. The HR Generalist will also be expected to assist with ensuring the Division of Student Life is making forward progress toward becoming a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization through advocacy and demonstrating Division of Student Life values in their interactions with all constituents. This position will advise and assist their customer areas on HR policies and practices, including but not limited to employee labor relations, payroll, timekeeping, leaves of absence, staffing, benefits, and workers' compensation.

The Division of Student Life is comprised of staff that embrace new ideas and thoughts, works together to keep our students safe, and provides them with life-changing experiences. The Division of Student Life includes 15 departments that span from Recreation Services to the Office of Leadership, Service and Civic Engagement and everything in between. Qualifications:

Assistant HR Director:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience (typically 3-5 years) managing a full range of Human Resources responsibilities (e.g. talent management and labor relations) in a large organization.
  • Experience (typically 3-5 years) managing employee/labor relations issues and leave management policies including Workers Compensation, FMLA, ADA.
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including a demonstrated commitment to excellence through diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Superior interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner while creating, promoting, and sustaining an inclusive environment.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to determine the root cause of organizational challenges and find/create resolutions that are in the best interest of the department.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of current federal and state laws, statutes, regulations, policies, and directives pertaining to HR.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and HR Information Systems.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience providing HR support in a college or university setting.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Experience developing and presenting employee/supervisory training; diversity, equity & inclusion training; and/or administering onboarding programs.
  • Experience analyzing and using HR data to make informed decisions and inform other decision-makers.
  • Experience with interpreting & applying University of Iowa (UI) policies and procedures.
  • Professional human resources certification such as Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Society for Human Resources Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP), or senior professional human resources certification (SPHR or SHRM-SCP).

HR Generalist

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the position; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience (typically 3 years or more) performing HR responsibilities, including conducting confidential investigations, in an HR role or HR environment.
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including a demonstrated active commitment to excellence through diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong professional relationships with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Working knowledge of current federal and state regulations impacting HR.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience (typically 6 months or more) working with employee and/or labor relations.
  • Experience performing HR responsibilities within a large and/or complex organization.
