Who We Are:

The Electromechanical & Optical Systems department of the Applied Physics Division at Southwest Research Institute conceives, develops, designs, and delivers specialized custom electrical, mechanical, and optical hardware system solutions to benefit the government, industry, and the public.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Utilize your expertise in optics and photonics to create innovative solutions that address complex research challenges and drive progress in cutting-edge technologies.
  • Collaborate with a team of talented engineers and scientists from various disciplines to cultivate and expand our technical capabilities and explore new areas of growth.
  • Apply your expertise in designing, developing, fielding, and supporting state-of-the-art electromechanical and optical systems that meet the unique needs of our clients and projects.
  • Contribute to the development of emerging technologies and drive business growth by engaging with sponsors and program managers, conducting internal research, and providing technical support to ongoing projects.
  • Demonstrate a passion for learning and applying new technologies, skills, and techniques to advance our work and stay at the forefront of emerging fields.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop custom electromechanical and optical system solutions that meet project requirements, leveraging your technical knowledge and experience.
  • Conduct research, analyze data, and stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and advancements in optics and photonics to continuously improve our solutions.
  • Engage with clients, sponsors, and program managers to understand their needs and provide technical support and guidance as needed.
  • Provide support for ongoing projects and programs, which encompasses assisting with design, development, testing, data collection, and reporting duties.
  • Assist in capturing new projects and programs by providing support for proposal writing, costing, research, concept/design development, and scheduling duties.
Requirements:
  • Requires an Bachelors, Masters or a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related engineering degree.
  • 0-5 years: Expertise in optics, laser, photonics, and imaging desired.
  • 0-5 years: Assembly of mechanical and opto-mechanical parts and systems. Experience with lithography and/or microfabrication desired.
  • 0-5 years: Experience with design, assembly and testing optical systems, electronic components, and optical bread-boarding.
  • 0-5 years: Experience with Zemax OpticStudio desired.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required

Special Requirements:

Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
