Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed.

Advanced Battery Engineering at General Motors is a rapidly developing automotive technology organization. This team is critical to achieving GM's vision of Zero Emissions, Zero Crashes, and Zero Congestion.

In this role you will be responsible for the advanced design and integration of all battery module components and assemblies within the high-voltage battery. You will engage with counterparts responsible for electrical hardware, structures, and thermal systems, as well as interface with and hand-off designs to the execution team for the continued development of the battery module after the advanced phase.

Responsibilities:

  • Be committed to safety in everything our team does.

  • Lead the battery module product development team (PDT) meeting for advanced battery program(s).
  • Support vehicle and propulsion teams with status reports for intended battery module designs, and to discuss technical trade-offs vs alternate design options.
  • Work with Battery Module Technical Specialists to select and design appropriate components consistent with the BoD & BoM strategies.
  • Partner with the Virtual Design, Development, & Validation (VDDV) Team to utilize virtual tools which assess the performance of battery module designs against program requirements.
  • Establish relationships with key suppliers and engage on development projects through Statement of Development Work (SODW) agreements.
  • During the advanced phase, deliver a battery module design solution with supporting analyses to confirm performance status vs requirements while meeting packaging constraints.
  • After the advanced phase, provide consulting support to the battery execution team as your design is sourced and launched into production.
  • For new concepts and ideas, establish fundamental learnings and develop designs through advanced technology projects (ATW).
  • Continuously benchmark automotive and other industries to identify and implement innovative technologies for electric vehicles.
  • Protect intellectual property (IP) by inventing and supporting inventors on the team to submit Records of Invention (ROI).

Additional Job Description

Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 2+ years of experience in product engineering of complex systems
  • Ability to lead complex technical projects with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to take ambiguous problems and define a tangible approach to identify optimal solutions
  • Showcase a wide range of creativity and latitude on challenging assignments
  • In-depth understanding of engineering principles
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working with suppliers
  • Familiarity with CAD and CAE

Desired Skills:
  • Master of Science in Engineering
  • 2+ years of battery engineering experience
  • Proficient in developing analytical models to inform design decisions (Excel, Matlab, etc..)
  • Experience in mechanical, thermal, electrical, and fluid analysis
  • High-voltage safety trained with hands-on experience
  • Experience with Unigraphics NX / CAD Software
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
