Position Summary

The Adjunct- Chemistry positionprovides quality instruction and maintains a positive learning environment inthe classroom with major emphasis placed on teaching, supporting and evaluatingstudents. The Adjunct role provides instruction and monitors teaching/learningeffectiveness in courses assigned by the Department Chair or other leadershipmembers. The incumbent must exhibit strong organizational skills and theability to multitask while engaging large groups of people with complicatedmaterial.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Instruction and StudentLearning

Teaches assigned courses asscheduled and assumes primary responsibility for and exercises oversight of thecurriculum in conjunction with the Department's policies, ensuring both therigor of programs and the quality of instruction.  Considers individualdifferences of students in order to design and support a range of appropriatelearning activities.  Participates in the identification of students withacademic or other needs and responds by utilizing an appropriateresource.  Uses technology in a manner appropriate to the nature andobjectives of courses and programs and communicates clearly to students theexpectations concerning the use of such technology.  Keeps accurate andappropriate records in accordance with the Faculty Handbook and departmentalpolicies.

Maintains attendance records,determines and submits grades timely, and in accordance with establishedpolicies and procedures of the College, and communicates progress feedback aswell as other relevant information to students throughout the semester.Distributes and maintain accurate syllabi that incorporates departmental,college, cross-college, and instructor requirements.

Conducts classespunctually and in accordance with the prescribed meeting schedule. Employsappropriate assessment techniques to measure students' performance in achievingcourse goals and objectives. Engages in periodic meetings with the department,Lead Instructor, and Chairperson relative to teaching duties and professionaldevelopment.

Student Engagement andAdvisement

Creates a positive classroomatmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort,academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and support forlearners.  Uses technology to assist in communication with students.  Encourages a sense of community amongstudents for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
 
Refers students to appropriate student and academic support services availableat the College or in the community.

Usual PhysicalRequirements

While performing duties of thisjob, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when enteringinformation into computer. Employee occasionally reaches with hands or arms, climbs orbalances and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. Employee occasionally lifts orexerts force of up to 30 pounds.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: theory, content and applications of inorganic, organic and biochemistry absolutely essential. Basic knowledge of internet research techniques and methods required. Proficient in Microsoft Office. Skill In: 1) providing quality instruction (developmental, multicultural, applied learning) and support to a diverse student body; 2) instructional planning and presentation, incorporating critical thinking and general education outcomes in the discipline's course content; and 3) effective and timely communication with peers, in particular the course and departmental leadership teams. Ability to: 1) demonstrate teaching strategies that focus on student-centered learning; 2) direct and assist students during active laboratory experiences; 3) explore and incorporate learning technologies and use of multi-media technology to enhance student learning; 4) perform student learning outcomes assessments; 5) demonstrate a commitment to improving student learning through innovative strategies that aid student success and retention and reflect industry trends; 6) adapt to multi-campus organizational work environments as well as changes in the discipline and 7) follow administrative directives concerning grade reporting, use of learning platforms, meeting classroom expectations and obligations consistent with being faculty at Columbus State Community College.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree or higher from an accredited academic institution in the disciplines of chemistry. Experience in the procedures of a teaching/learning laboratory setting. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: Prior teaching experience, experience using an online course management system (Blackboard, Canvas, Edmodo, Moodle) and online course instruction techniques and methods.
