Job Summary

Provide chair side assistance to dental students, residents, faculty and licensed dental staff in graduate department specialized in orthodontics (straightening teeth with braces or other appliances).

This position is posted at a TE06 level but may be filled at a TE05 level depending on the candidate's qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at the lower rank. Please see the Required Qualifications section below for the qualifications listed for each level.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide chair side assistance to dentist by passing instruments, holding devices such as suction tubes and cleaning patients' mouth during and after procedures. Assist in adjusting head gear. Take out or tie in arch wires. Help place orthodontic brackets and cement. Take intra-oral photographs on patients. Take impressions for diagnostic casts and appliances.

- Take x-rays and identify problems and changes with patient's mouth. Create molds of patient's bite.

- Instruct graduate students and pre-doctoral dental students on placing bands and brackets. Teach students how to take x-rays and intra-oral photographs.

- Demonstrate proper infection control procedures in set up. Confirm that instruments are sterilized and working properly and organize them for procedures and/or surgery.

- Ensure that equipment used for dental procedures is sterilized and areas are clean and ready to receive new patients. Assist front office in scheduling follow up visits.

Required Qualifications

TE05 Dental Assistant Requirements:

High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited dental assisting program or two years of dental assisting experience.

X-ray license.

Knowledge of dental and medical terminology. Attention to detail to properly set-up all necessary instruments, materials and supplies for procedure. Ability to work in a busy clinic with many interruptions. Strong communication skills. Active listening and critical thinking skills. Ability to interact daily with students, patients, co-workers , dentists and residents. Understanding of customer service and ability to follow service standards. Interpersonal skills to communicate with diverse groups of people. Computer ability for electronic records.

TE05 Dental Assistant II Requirements:

Dental assistant requirements plus one year of assisting experience in a university setting.

X-ray license.

Knowledge of dental and medical terminology. Attention to detail to properly set-up all necessary instruments, materials and supplies for procedure. Ability to work in a busy clinic with many interruptions. Strong communication skills. Active listening and critical thinking skills. Ability to interact daily with students, patients, co-workers , dentists and residents. Understanding of customer service and ability to follow service standards. Interpersonal skills to communicate with diverse groups of people. Computer ability for electronic records.

TE06 Dental Assistant Specialist Requirements:

Dental assistant requirements plus one year of assisting in Orthodontics.

X-ray license.

Knowledge of dental and medical terminology. Attention to detail to properly set-up all necessary instruments, materials and supplies for procedure. Ability to work in a busy clinic with many interruptions. Strong communication skills. Active listening and critical thinking skills. Preferred Qualifications

Dental Assistant Certification. Experience in Orthodontics.

Working Conditions / Demands

Ability to manuever through the busy clinic. May occassionally need to assist patient in and out of chair. May need to hold patient in place by restricting head, jaw or body movements, sometimes for extended periods. Majority of shift spent chairside assisting or moving through the clinic to assist students and patients. May need to lift supplies up to 25 pounds. May need to push or pull a cart to move supplies. Must be able to operate a computer.
