As the Academic Business Manager for the IU School of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery you will employ your strong business acumen, financial expertise, and dynamic leadership skills to help drive the strategic direction of the academic and research missions of our department.

Job Summary

The Academic Business Manager will serve as the primary resource to the Chair and Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery for information related to the academic activities of the department. In this key role, you will provide leadership and management in the areas of fiscal affairs, research administration, human resources management, compliance, purchasing, and asset management. This position is highly complex and involves interaction with leadership across the academic health system.

The individual in this position will take a proactive and intuitive approach to:

• Planning and directing the fiscal affairs of the department, including IU related account management and sponsored research accounts; ensures fiscal responsibility.
• Providing strategic financial leadership and support for potential alliances, investments and other issues affecting the business interests of the department.
• Overseeing research related financial activities to ensure compliance with University and funding agency regulations.
• Enhancing and facilitating the research operations of the Department through collaborative efforts with the research faculty.
• Providing administrative leadership and direction for all grant management activities, and compliance within the department.
• Managing the purchasing processes, payroll, space planning, and capital assets and safeguarding department assets by protecting and accounting for resources such as cash and fixed assets.
• Leading, training, and mentoring department staff, fully utilizing their abilities by delegating effectively.
• Coordinating and managing department human resources and appointment activities for faculty and staff.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related field and three years of related experience.

Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships and communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization. Strong business administration background with experience in areas such as: internal controls, data analysis and reporting, AP/AR, budgeting, contract compliance and monitoring, and policy and procedure development and administration. Possesses a demonstrated track record of strong financial, analytic and problem solving capabilities and ability to see the broader implications of key decisions. Ability to take ownership of and provide complete follow through on issues and concerns related to activities within the scope of the duties of the position. Good decision making capabilities and ability to understand and articulate complex situations.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree.

Working Conditions / Demands

Professional office environment. The incumbent will be stationary for extended periods of time, working on a computer. Ability to move between various locations on campus. Environment can be very stressful at times.
